I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights on a short break to Kyoto when we were on holiday in Tokyo last year.
The location is excellent and is only a few minutes walk from the beautiful Gion district. The rooms are very small but I have to say this is standard across Japan in the lower priced hotels especially in the main Cities. The room wasn't comfortable and I wouldn't like to have stayed here for any longer than 2 nights. The decor was very dated and there was a lack of air conditioning which wasn't much fun as it was extremely hot when we stayed there. The room did have everything you need, it was just a little cramped and not very welcoming. The standard of cleanliness wasn't great, it wasn't really dirty, but it certainly could have been better.
One little detail that I did like even though it is very small is that they left little Japanese Origami paper cranes on our pillows which was nice. The staff were very helpful and friendly but the hotel is just a little gloomy and does not reflect the beauty and tradition of the surrounding areas.
I wouldn't recommend this hotel for a long stay but it is satisfactory just for a one or 2 night stay just because of the great location, it has all of your basic needs but no frills.
Not the worst place I have stayed in but by far not the best! To be honest I don't think I will be staying in this hotel next year if I can find something a little better in the same location.
As for Kyoto it is a place you must absolutely visit! It is the most beautiful city I have ever been to and there is something quite magical about the Gion district where you can still see traditional Geisha and Maiko. It was a lovely contrast to the neon and bustle of Tokyo and the beauty of Kyoto made our stay in the hotel bearable. I will definitely be traveling back to Kyoto for a few more days next year during my annual Tokyo holiday because we just didn't have enough time to see everything and there really was so much to see! It is nice to see that Kyoto has retained a lot of it's original grace, tradition and beauty while Tokyo seems to get more Americanised with every visit sadly. ( no disrespect to America but I would like Tokyo to keep it's wonderful Japanese quirkiness!).
