My wife and I have just returned from a super fortnight in our motorhome on Karrageen Holiday Park,Bolberry, near Kingsbridge,South Devon.
It is often said that first impressions count. We had great expectations after having received their brochure. This was of a very high standard, including several colour photographs of the site and the surrounding area, with plenty of detailed information.
The site is owned and entirely run by Phil and his wife Nikki, with additional help from their three teenage children,Natalie,Ryan and Lauren, during the holidays.Their attention to detail was evident from the start.
Phil welcomed us personally, and led us to a choice of 2 pitches he had reserved for us.As I have walking difficulties, the first pitch was, thoughtfully,in the small field, close to the toilet, shower and laundry block. However,we chose the alternative, which was in the next field, with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and over Hope Cove to the sea,1 mile away. This field is divided by mature hedges for privacy, and there are numerous water points around the site, fed with fresh water from the site's own spring.
He kindly helped site the van on the very generous pitch, and made sure that we were O.K. In fact Phil makes a point of walking around the site each morning, checking if anyone is having problems. This personal attention was much appreciated by all the guests. He is very much hands-on,whether with the strimmer,or mowing until dusk and also keeping all the facilities clean and tidy.
His wife Nikki is an excellent cook, and bakes organic baguettes and croissants to order each morning. She also provides a very extensive takeaway menu each evening at reasonable prices. There are 20 or so luxury static caravans, beautifully landscaped, in the smaller field, of which 5 are for hire--more work for Nikki !
The well stocked licensed shop is manned every morning and evening by Phil,Nikki or daughter Natalie, and they all provide a warm welcome, with a very wide range of food, drink, camping essentials and even wetsuits and bodyboards, all at sensible prices.
The lanes in South Devon are in places very narrow with high hedges, which caused a problem with our large motorhome, due to my inability to walk far. Nikki very kindly spent time explaining which were the best routes to use to reach Hope Cove and Bolberry Down, and gave us valuable information about visiting Salcombe,Dartmouth and Kingsbridge. These were all very well worth a visit.
As several picturesque villages are inaccessible to larger vehicles,we decided to hire a small car from a local firm in Kingsbridge. The hire charge was very reasonable, and the car was delivered to the site and collected at the end of our holiday without charge--an excellent service.
We can thoroughly recommend this holiday to anyone looking for peace and tranquillity in delightful surroundings. The personal attention and ready offers of assistance were some of the reasons why so many of the guests we met were regular visitors. There was a very happy atmosphere on the site. We look forward to making a return visit ourselves in the near future.
