In The Shadow Of Olive Groves.
Advantages: Quiet and peaceful and a taste of rural Greece. Disadvantages: No nightlife and car hire may be advised if you wish to travel.
...The village of Katelios is somewhere that having researched I decided would be ideal, as it is far from any of the more developed areas on the island. I must however point out that Kefalonia suffered a dreadful earthquake in 1953 when almost all the island was destroyed, and so nowhere is built up or has fallen victim to mass tourism. The island as a whole is beautiful and Katelios is no exception. The village itself lies in the south east of the ... ...way down through Old Katelios, Katelios itself and the sea beyond. If you are feeling energetic you can do this walk in about 45 minutes, but you will need a fit heart and a lot of stamina but the views make it so worth while. The village itself is a mixture of small villas, studios with pools, and restaurants and tavernas, and there is evidence of new buildings and dusty cement mixers appear here and there, but the noise is minimal as these are ...

Argostoli - A Must Visit When in Cephalonia
Advantages: Shopping, food, bars, beauty, markets Disadvantages: It's more built up than the rest of the island.
...at the time we went. At nearly a kilometre in length, the arched bridge is beautiful and quite a feat of engineering, built at the beginning of the 19th century with no cement to hold its stones together. The earthquake of 1953 destroyed most of the buildings in Argostoli, so many don't date further back that this but they are still beautiful and keep the feel of the originals. In some places Mulberry trees can be found to line the streets and this ... ...but the wait is long! Argostoli is a great place to visit, especially if you're staying in another area of Cephalonia. It makes a nice change, mixing up the holiday a bit and a visit will show you the more cosmopolitan side of the island. Great for shopping and for going out in the evening. A lively, tasteful, beautiful place to visit. ...

Melisani Underground Lake
Advantages: Beautiful Disadvantages: short experience
I visited the underground lake in 2006, It is a beautiful an idyllic place once inside and it is worth a visit, but it is not as grand a huge as the advertising suggests. Outside is a dusty stone/hardcore car park with a small shop and toilet on it. The entrance is a set of stone steps leading underground to a narrow tunnel ,quite cramped a not for the claustrophobic. Inside is actually quite small and the tour on the boats is a very short experience, ... ...alone is so vibrant. Personally i would recommend a visit as it is beautiful and probably one of those things that you would only do once or twice in a lifetime, but don't go expecting too much - make sure you take a camera!
The cost was around 5 euro each, access is by car or organised trip only as its not really accessible otherwise ...

Argostili , Kefalonia
Advantages: Very nice place Disadvantages: disjointed shopping areas
...i thought it would be. The town shops are pretty much randomly placed around the town in no particular organised areas or signage outside, and nothing like the spanish / english counterparts in organised strips and areas. There are plenty of shops but you have to explore to find what you want. Parking was easy, I eventually found a supermarket, but they are not obvious! except one large one outside the capitol. I took a glass bottomed boat trip from ...

Magical, Melisani lake, Kefalonia, Greece
Advantages: Mystical, magical, underground lake Disadvantages: You might need a jacket as it is a bit cold undergorund
I visited Kefalonia in May/June 2007 and part of an island tour we did included a visit to the wonderful underground lake of Mellisani. The 'red' carpet we walked down towards the underground lake was actually green astro-turf which did seem a little odd but the view and tour that followed had nothing artificial about it and was magical! At the end of the green carpet the boatmen were waiting for visitors to get onboard. I recommend a cardigan or ... ...are cold. You also need good grip on your shoes as the painted wooden boats can be a bit slippy.
The boatmen use oars to propel the boat around the lake, some giving renditions of 'Just one cornetto' during the 15 minute trip. The boat is guided through a very narrow gap into an adjoining cave where the roof is still intact and birds can be seen nesting in the rocks high above. Out boatman offered to take photos of people on the boat but most couples ...
