I am 64years old, married with 2 daughters and 1 granddaughter. I love my holidays both at home and abroad. I retired from my job as an insurance services admin supervisor 4 years ago, and am now enjoying some 'me' time at long last.

Just returned from two weeks in Skala. The weather was hot, hot, hot, between 95 and 100 F every day. We stayed at the Nirithes Apartments, a small place with a very attractive pool area, and spacious rooms, which was at the top of the village, and then up a further steep slope. The island is not really suitable for people with walking difficulties as there are quite a few hills.
Kefalonia is very mountainous and much greener than most Greek islands, and the houses look well kept on the whole. There are lots of prettily coloured houses and hotels, giving the place a very attractive look. Skala is not much more than a small village, but there are a good many restaurants and bars. If you want a buzzing nightlife then don't go there, a good meal and a few drinks is what you will find every evening. Fortunately that is just what we wanted.
The beach at Skala is fine, coarse sand, but shingle at the water's edge. If you like to swim a lot, then invest in some rubber beach shoes, you'll find it a lot easier to get into the water. It shelves quite deeply a few yards in, and there are fishes swimming in the shallows . We saw a man feeding them with bread, and they were crowding round him, and jumping for the food. It is a Blue Flag beach so it is clean and has a few beach bars and tavernas along the back. A good beach bar is Milos along the beach to the right about 300 yds from the main street. On the seafront there are some relatively larger hotels & apartments, these are a little more expensive than others further into the village, and their sunbeds are free to anyone as long as you buy drinks etc from the bar The people speak really good English in the restaurants etc. and they are very friendly. We had some wonderful meals, much better than the usual Greek tourist food. A few restaurants were recommended by other holidaymakers, but I would say, try any you like and make your own mind up, we were invariably disappointed when we listened to others.
If you want to go on a trip around the island or to another island, check out the ones on offer in the village. We found the same ones available at about 2/3 the price, and the details were virtually the same. We used Panem for a 3 Island trip, including Onassis' island Skorpios which cost 39euros as against 52euros with our travel company. The mountains are quite high, and the evidance of the 1953 earthquake can be seen all around, with steep gullies and rough ground.
We have been to many other Greek islands, but this was our first time in Kefalonia, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. If you want a relaxing holiday swimming, sunbathing, eating and drinking, then this is perfect for you

A good review. You looked at different aspects of the island: restuarants, beaches and the scenery. Perhaps something on the culture?
I visited Skala last year and stayed at the Pelagos Bay Hotel. It was lovely holiday and now I am trying to return nearly every year.

Advantages: Absolutely stunning, still relatively untouched Disadvantages: A hilly island, possibly not appreciated by car, so I feel walking is necessary

Review of Kefalonia (Greece)
Advantages: One of Europe's cheapest holiday destinations Disadvantages: Nobody told us all the interesting bits were flattened by an earthquake in 1953
