We spent some time travelling in the South and West of Ireland and, after landing at Cork and an easy 50 mile drive, stayed the first night at the Kenmare Bay Hotel. The hotel is ideally situated for exploring the beauties of the Kerry countryside, although the day following our stay was wet and misty, which meant that anything more than 50 yards from the roadside on the Ring of Kerry was invisible!
The hotel itself is on the large side with 136 rooms, but the service is still personal and friendly. The night we stayed there were a couple of coach trips booked in so early booking for dinner was advisable. The food is locally sourced, cooked well and we can specially recommend the seafood chowder and the Kerry beef.
The rooms are spacious and clean and, because they have large windows, appear bright and welcoming. Guests have a choice of smoking or non-smoking accommodation and each room has the usual tea and coffee, hairdryer, TV and “dial 9 for an outside line” telephone. The beds are comfortable and the en-suite facilities are good with shower and whirlpool bath. The local water must be very soft judging by the prodigious amounts of foam that a small amount of Radox can generate!
We found that in some of the larger Irish towns (Tralee being a particularly bad example) car parking is rather problematical but as this hotel is just outside the town itself and has its own large car park we could park right outside our bedroom window.
