Now part of a chain but still has character
Advantages: A taste of old colonial Disadvantages: Can't think of any
Stayed here on two separate nights on the Kuoni Leopard safari this July but it's used as the start point for a lot of Kuoni tours. Hotel used to be the Mayfair Court (stayed here in 94) and retains a lot of local flavour with pretty gardens, water features and an outdoor canopied breakfast restaurant where much food is cooked fresh to order. This overlooks a decent sized swimming pool but you aren't assaulted by chlorine.
The room the first time ... ...we were in a spacious ground floor room overlooking the garden (where a wedding was taking place) with the most comfortable beds and pillows ever - so comfy that we tucked ourselves under duvets and watched TV from bed (we had been on the road for 14 days)! Big bars of soap in the bathroom.
There is an excellent steak restaurant opening off the lobby - a wide choice of very good meat, a salad buffet, hot chips (Kenya travellers will know that hot ...

Lazing at the Leopard
Advantages: Wonderful setting and spa facilities Disadvantages: Beds very hard
We spent three nights here after a 2-week Kuoni safari through Kenya and were looking for sunshine and indulgence. The sun hardly shone but the indulgence made up for it! The hotel is situated in well maintained gardens on the beach south of Mombasa and the rooms are bungalows or pretty 2-storey blocks. We had a standard room which was clean, spacious, had a good sized bathroom and patio doors to your own outdoor seating area overlooking gardens ... ...door one day, rang reception and it was fixed within hours. Nothing was too much trouble for the very friendly staff. The food was the best on the whole holiday - fresh, hot when supposed to be, plentiful and served in a lovely setting overlooking the sea. Much of the meat was cooked to order - a complete change from the safari experience where the buffet offerings were often tired and lukewarm. We were on half board so only used one of the bars/bistros ...

The Joyous Jacaranda
Advantages: Pleasant accommodation, friendly staff Disadvantages: Potentially mangy cats!
Opened in 1964, the hotel Jacaranda is approximately a 30-45 minute drive from Nairobi Airport and although it is only 2km from the city centre, this is a peaceful place to stay surrounded by beautiful gardens.
WHAT DOES IT OFFER?
As well as 121 rooms (including 18 executive rooms), this 3 star hotel offers a huge reception lobby with ample seating, excellent conference facilities, 24-hour porter and room service, an outdoor swimming pool, coach/car ... ...their luck. Everyone at the Jacaranda seemed incredibly helpful. They spoke very good English and were very pleasant. The porter who carried our bags to our room even wrote down a few Kenyan words and their English translation to help us get by during our first few days. Cynical buggers that we are, we found ourselves checking our Kenyan guidebook to make sure he hadn't taught us anything offensive for a laugh, but it turned out that he was just ...

Nairobi the gateway to the Safari
Advantages: Convenient starting point to Kenyan and Tanzanian safaris Disadvantages: Area rather dangerous if out alone
...stay in the 4 star Serena lodges and hotels which are dotted around Kenya and Tanzania. Getting there...............
It took about 45 minutes by taxi to get to the hotel from Nairobi's International airport - mainly due to the traffic rather than the distance (18kms). My main observation on this journey was the very bizarre sight of giraffes on the open spaces beyond the roads! First Impressions....... The impressive hotel is set well off the road ... ...guard and a sweeping driveway and porters who help you with your bags as soon as your car has stopped. The building is an immaculate construction of white stone and glass. There is a large, smart, air conditioned reception area with really comfy seating and a relaxed atmosphere - it is a good place to hang out whilst you are waiting for the safari guides to arrive. The Staff....
The staff are very friendly, helpful and professional and make your ...
