Turtle Bay Beach Club
Advantages: Great food, staff, accommodation, on beach Disadvantages: None
When we arrived we were treated like royalty, sat down and given drinks and fruit.
Then we were taken to our rooms when we were ready.
It was great the porters put the suitcases on their head and carry them, even up the stairs.
We had heard that the children always want pens and paper out there so we had taken some with us in our suitcases and that meant one of the cases were over 15Kg and they still put it on their head and carried them up the ... ...pool, as soon as they saw us coming they had drinks ready for us before we even reached the pool.
Great evening entertainment every night.
They has 1 great act with fire eating and lots of acrobatics, we saw them at butlins a couple of years later and were able to talk to them.
They were happy to have classes and teach people how to speak swahili, which we tried to do, but everybody in the hotel speak very good english, even the cleaners spoke ...

There's a leopard in the hotel!
Advantages: The view, leopard feeding Disadvantages: Basic rooms, lizard infestation, falic puddings
Where it is:
Ngulia Lodge is in the middle of Tsavo West Safari park in Kenya. Tsavo East and West combined creates the largest game reserve in Kenya and offers a different range to the Masai Mara. Also unlike the Masai it is easily accesible from Mombasa via road (about 2 hours.) Tsavo West is thicker with dense vegetation compared to the east which is more dusty and barren. If you are planning to do a safari from Mombasa you will need to go for ... ...Tsavo East and West, but this hotel is only a 15 minute drive from the rhino sanctuary - the only place you are going to see them as they still need to be protected from poachers.
The rooms:
The rooms were pretty basic. A tiled floor, a bed and a bathroom with bath and shower. Electricity was only available between 1-2pm and from 6pm in the evening. We think this is because the hotel runs on solar power. Also if you are doing a safari you will ...

giraffe manor, hotel Nirobi
Advantages: Giraffes on doostep! Views and surroundings. Disadvantages: dont think there is any!
I visited this resort/hotel when i was in Kenya last year, i went mainly to see the giraffe's at the sancturary, they were amazing! They all looked really healthy and were well looked after, we could all pet and feed them which was such good fun, they have MASSIVE tongues! The hotel is so luxurious looking, it's a proper manor house and looks like it should be in England if it were'nt for the giraffes and surroundings! Its down a private road away ... ...We had a quick tour of the hotel after we were done with the giraffes, the rooms are really spacious and very clean, whilst it is'nt really modern it still looks up to date whilst inkeeping with the Hotels character and look. The resturant inside looked really nice, the menu was interesting and quick extensive so there is plenty to choose from. The best thing about the Hotel is the view over the nature reserve, the fields are suprisingly green and ...

Up close and personal at Treetops
Advantages: Eye ball to eye ball with wildlife Disadvantages: Lots of stairs
Staying at Treetops is a unique experience - and I've now been twice. I'd go every weekend if it wasn't so far away. There is nowhere like it for getting up close and personal - with both wildlife and fellow guests! The accommodation is literally built around trees and is almost completely made of wood. The tiny 2-bed rooms smell deliciously of cedarwood and there are tree trunks up through the lounges. The viewing facilities, both indoor and outside, ... ...warning you of wildlife appearances during the night. They put food out for the birds which you can watch from a couple of feet away. Dinner - hot and delicious - is taken 'assembly' style with a neat sliding service rack in the centre of the tables and there was also afternoon tea. Delightful.
You can only take a small item of luggage and the rest is stored at Outspan from where you are bussed to Treetops. You return to Outspan for breakfast. There ...

Life Ain't a Beach Here
Advantages: If all you want is to lie by a pool and eat stodge, it's fine Disadvantages: Pretty much anything else
*Overall - a disappointing stay. The grounds, pool etc. are pleasant enough and the rooms are fine. It was unfortunately the people that ruined it. As a young woman alone, I felt very much like an object of curiosity to all and often felt vulnerable.*
*I booked through Kuoni and got a cheap deal due to the political situation in Kenya. Kuoni offer a rep who just wanted to sell tours which I couldn't afford, but if you want to do day trips or safaris, ... ...tours and hang around the hotel. Or just ask the reception staff. Always negotiate the price - bargaining is expected in Kenya.*
Rooms - old-fashioned, but in a nice enough way. For the price you can't complain. The AC is cold (in fact, once I acclimatised I was often too cold at night) if noisy, the bathrooms are clean and work, you get a fridge and TV - reception was sometimes dodgy but you're in Kenya, why would you want to watch TV?
Pool - ...
