Blasket Case

Advantages: The haunting final fling of Ireland's utmost west
Disadvantages: Could do with being a little more haunting, perhaps

...bar of Toblerone. This is Great Blasket Island, a fabulous place for anyone who wants yet more from Dingle without going to the hassle of the oft-described ‘next parish’, best described as ‘America’. While tame of outline compared with the fairytale turrets of the Skelligs to the south, or even with its own satellite islands of Inishnabro, Inishvickillane and Inishtooskert (the latter looking like St Brendan comatose in the sea after a particularly ...
...synonymous with the writings of Great Blasket. And if you see a woman in traditional dress roaming the paths of the island or loitering by the side of the road near Dunquin on the mainland (where she was born, and from where you catch the ferry), a woman with the sort of wind-blasted face that resembles the leather on the back seat of a 1970s car that’s been torched and thrown into a disused quarry, and she asks if you want to hear about the ghastly ...

'There's a feeling I get...'

Advantages: A spectacular, lofty peak overlooking one of the fairest of scenes...
Disadvantages: Well, unless you're lazy, none, really

...Macgillycuddy's Reeks, which culminate at Carrauntuohill, Ireland's highest peak. The Reeks are a long, spurred ridge with much ground over the magic altitude of 3000ft (indeed, there's substantially more 3000ft terrain therein than in the rest of Ireland put together), and Ireland's four highest mountains are all located here. Carrauntuohill lies towards the western end of the range, with the main spine running east and two prominent subsidiary ...
...the furthest away) knob of Carrauntuohill, before the huge blunt pyramid of Caher completes the scene. Crossing the dam and pressing on in the same direction will soon have you plodding up a slightly squidgy slope: on emerging on the ridge ahead, I could just say 'turn left up Caher'. But this is a long climb, and I should probably make reference to the superb retrospective view that you'll probably use as the excuse for a rest on more than one ...

'Come on pilgrim, you know he loves you...'

Advantages: The finest mountain in the British Isles
Disadvantages: The weather. 'Fickle' doesn't begin to sum it up.

...didn't last very long... Brandon Mountain (3127ft) - (Cnoc Bhreandáin) Brendan's hill In its utmost south-west, Ireland throws out four (if you're fussy, five) peninsulas, like a misshapen and gnarly hand attempting to claw defiantly at the sea. First there is Mizen, hilly rather than mountainous, and something of an hors d'oeuvre. Then, across Bantry Bay, is Beara, a land somehow splicing violently rocky peaks and jagged coastline with verdant ...
...(in particular, Slea Head and Brandon Point). And there is a huge L-shaped crescent of mountains: starting south of Tralee with the Slieve Mish/Bautregaum group, crossing a low col to the west to the Benoskee / Stradbally tops, before finally bending north over the magnificent Conor (Conair) Pass to culminate in the fabulous massif of Brandon, in my humble opinion the finest mountain in the British Isles. This is a big claim, but I'm far from alone ...

Scenery to die for!

Disadvantages: If you haven't got your own car you are a little restricted

...of them being Kerry. Whilst the group of us unfortunately didn't have time to do a full day exploring the Ring of Kerry, we did have a couple of hours to spend driving down part of it. The Ring is located in the south-west region of Ireland and is a large section of Peninsula that is known for it's sheer beauty. With many locations dotted around the edges or within the 'ring' it is a great location to stay if you love the counryside as there are ...
...On the day we explored it we were on our way to Sneem from the town centre of Kerry - we decided that we wanted to see Torq waterfall and this was only about 20 minutes, if that driving time from the town centre. Having pulled in the small car park located just off the road we walked the short distance to the waterfall. The scenery is beautiful but, as most of us didn't have walking shoes with us we only went as far as the bottom of the fall. It ...
