Keycamp is a great company for those on a tight budget who still want to get abroad for some summer sun. You must however enjoy the outdoor life as the accomodation offered is either in tents or mobile homes on sites in France, Spain, Italy, Germany and Holland.
Don't let this put you off however as the tent accomodation includes fully errected, large tents with proper beds and mattresses, a fridge, gas hob (no oven), electric light, tables, chairs and sunloungers and plenty of cutlery, crockery, pans etc.
The mobile homes are of various sizes and also have all of the above but also a proper cooker and microwaves, cd players, heating, toilet/shower room and sinks.
You can either get a brochure from travel agents or look at the keycamp website online (booking on-line or by phone available). Prices vary depending on what time of year you travel, how long you go for, what type of accomodation you choose, which site, how and where you cross the channel and insurance options you choose.
For an idea of prices...we went this year to a campsite called L'Atlantique in Brittany for 2 weeks in a tent at the end of May, crossed via the Channel Tunnel then drove with an overnight stop in Picardy, used the Keycamp family car and personal insurance option and included damage waiver. This came to a grand total of £620. Not bad for a 2 week holiday for a family of 4 (we could have taken 2 more children for no extra cost). Price also includes use of kids club, called Fun Stations ,which our kids loved.
We have used this company 4 times now and have not had any problems at all. The descriptions of sites have been pretty accurate. Our favourites have been L'Atlantique and Arzano in Brittany and Wattweiler near to the German border in France (I don't think this one is available anymore).
You can choose sites on variables such as size, location obviously, size of emplacement (your plot), facilities available (all usually have great pools with water shute etc, shop, bar, shower and toilet blocks, kids clubs). We tend to go for the small to medium sites as our one large site experience was not so good (Bernie Rivere) fortunately this was just a stopover site for us on the way to Wattweiler.
We have only tried France so far as the length of driving to other countries seems too much or fly drive makes the costs increase too much.
The main competitors to Keycamp are Eurosites, Canvas and Vaccance Soleil. We have had a nose at their tents and prefer the way the Keycamp tents are set up inside.
You also receive a 'regular customer' discount if you travel with Keycamp again. There are also discounts for early booking which we have done. However there always seem to be offers nearer the time if you are prepared to have less choice of sites.
Hope this info is of use (I have ticked the criteria below based on general sites not specific ones). We will certainly be using Keycamp again.
