Advantages: Great food and as much as you can eat (oh and the ice cream) Disadvantages: Expensive and uninviting
...Merchant City area of Glasgow Khublai Khan's is a restaurant for those with adventurous tastes only.
It's perhaps not the best way to start but I'll begin with one of the few disadvantages. The outside of Khan's is not very inviting. It's tinted windows don't allow you to see if people are having fun inside and that probably turns people away, including me for a while. I like to know that the place I'm about to eat is popular with ... ...My girlfriend and I did eventually decide to venture in one day before heading off to a play as Khan's do a reasonably priced pre theatre menu.
There are two eating options at Kahn's. The first is to go pre theatre which is served between 5:30 and 6:30 and costs around £10 and the second is the full feast with comes in at £15.50. There's no a la carte or anything like that.

It's tinted windows don't allow you to see if people are having fun inside and that probably turns people away, including me for a while. I like to know that the place I'm about to eat is popular with other people, generally that means the food is quite good. My girlfriend and I did eventually decide to venture in one day before heading off to a play as Khan's do a reasonably priced pre theatre menu.

The pre theatre consists of two courses, either starter + main (one visit, I'll explain this shortly), two mains, or main + pudding (I recommend the home made Malteaser ice cream here, yum yum). The starter comes from a regular menu and includes your usual starters, soup, Yak ribs that sort of thing. What, you mean you don't normally see Yak ribs on a menu? It tastes like pork and is actually quite nice.
What comes next is perhaps the best bit (well excluding the ice cream, Mmmm ice cream). You get to actually concoct your own main course. This consists of taking a bowl (a bit smaller than an average breakfast bowl and made of metal) and filling it with exactly what you want. The procedure begins with noodles, veg and that sort of thing followed by a choice of around eight different meats and fish. There is a sign there to let you know that mixing meats is not the best idea as they cook at different rates. The range usually includes, Beef, Chicken, Crab, Mussels, Ostrich, Shark, you get the idea. You can put as much as you like on. Next comes my girlfriends favourite bit. There is a massive range of sauces and spices you can add. There are suggestions on the wall, and on your place mats but I think most people just make up their own recipes, I know I do. If you go for the full feast you can do this as often as you like, your left to your own devices.
After you've filled your bowl you hand it to the chef and it's cooked right in front of you. If a few people are going up at the same time there is usually a good mix of aromas surrounding the cooking area, it gets you in the mood for your own dish.
Well that's about it. A starter and one trip to the buffet is filling enough for a visit to the theatre, but I recommend the full feast (which I have also tried). I managed 4 trips to the buffet along with a starter and pudding (Oh did I mention the Malteaser ice cream :-)
The service is not the best in Glasgow so it's thankful that for most of the part you help yourself. The decor is very Mongolian with many portraits of Khubli and his Grandfather Ghengis.
All in all it's a good evening out but it's a tad expensive.
Advantages: fun and interactive Disadvantages: slightly expensive
...The simple idea behind Khublai Khan is that for your main meal, you take a bowl, fill it with your own choice of the rice/noodles,veg and meat on offer, and then concoct your own sauce from the wide range of sauces and spices provided. You then hand your bowl over, and watch as your food is cooked on a massive hotplate, supposedly reminiscent of the monogolian soldiers who cooked their food on an upturned shield. It's a modern take on an old tradition, ... ...city, the decor is modern, although a mural of mongolian soldiers dominates one wall. The staff are quite helpful, unpretentious, and don't intrude too much on your meal, which is a blessing in glasgow sometimes. The prices aren't too cheap however, and to take full value from what you are paying, I suggest you also take along a LARGE appetite. Taking advantage of the feast means unlimited trips to the buffet, so make sure that you are prepared to ...

Advantages: Interesting novelty Disadvantages: Not really worth it / Not really traditional mongolian dishes like i expected
Eating Asian cuisine all the time (in fact right now) i know what i'm talking about. I'm rather sceptical if this is Mongolian food... the method of cooking maybe but the actual food could be anything really...
There is a small selections of starters such as prawns (fishing mongolians now is it) & spare boar ribs (really just regular pork ribs).
The real gimmick is where u have to pay £15 per head for the glorified buffet. What u do i take your ... ...veg (mongolians never has so much veg i tell ya)! Keep away from the meat if you're on a diet as they're all drenched in oil for the inevitable cooking. The veg is quite standard. The meat is quite interesting, as well as the usual there is ostrich. However, when i went some of the meat wasn't looking too fresh & some had changed colour.
Then it's onto concocting a sauce & i have to hand it to them here, there are plenty of spices & ingredients ...

...and myself went to the Khublai Khan for an evening last week, what a night!! The food is so different and it is basically up to you to decide what goes onto your meal and whats left out. The starteres are served at your table and selected from the basic menu, we tried five different starters including Ostrich Enchiladas, Soup, Yak Ribs, Mussells and Spring Rolls. they were quite light and did not bag you up like a lot of starters.
The main meal ... ...bit is you get to put all of your favourite ingredients together yourself and watch them getting cooked.
You take a small dish, similar to a balti dish, and start filling. The choice starts with rice, noodles or bean sprouts, then onto the veg, no big surprises here, mushroom, courgette, red onion, peppers etc. Then the meat or seafood, among the usual suspects like chicken, prawns and beef there is shark, kangaroo, wild boar and ostrich - they ...
