We have been to Ireland twice now and always stay at the same place Kerry Mountain Cottages are just ace, situated at the base of the Kerry Mountains a short walk from the Gap of Dunloe. There are about 15 Cottages on a sloped site on the road from Killarney to Tralee, at a little village called Beaufort.

On our first visit we had cottage number one which as you might expect was the first cottage and at the mouth of the site, not the best one to go for, so on our second visit, when I was booking it up (with Swansea Cork Ferries) I requested that we have one with a view of the mountain and when we booked in (they use one of the cottages as an site office) they had given us cottage no 15 probably the best one on the site.

The cottages themselves have 3 bedrooms, a spacious lounge, fully fitted kitchens, dishwashers, microwaves, tumble dryers, washing machines, central heating, colour telly everything better that home from home a little garden to sit out in ( if its not raining). Of course you have to pay for any electric you use. There is a local shop owned my Sheleigh O‘Hanahan, a sweet little lady and two local pubs both within crawling distance.

In the area they is so much to do and see kilarny is about 8 miles away, which has a supermarket (tesco) and loads of pubs and nightlife. Just a short walk away is the gap of dunloe (which although we have attempted it twice have never yet done it) where you can walk through between the mountains (don’t worry in true Irish hospitality there is a pub as each end) or you can hire a horse to ride, or a horse and cart (can be expensive, but you can barter with the owners). Beware twice we have started this walk and had to stop the weather is especially bad and gets worse and worse the further you go, but I’ll do it one day.

Dingle bay is especially barren and even in August its mighty nippy down there, its an awful long way (for nothing) it not only applies to Tipperary, but what appeals to me most about Ireland is they are so advanced (i.e. they were set up for the Euro 10 years ago) yet you get a knife and folk to eat your cereal with (oh, will ya be wanting a spoon at all) they are sweet and so funny, but I think they’re the salt of the earth.

Warning there is a down side and thats the weather
the local joke is : the seasons
Spring : rain
Summer : rain
Autumn : rain
Winter : Snow

Beware take your waterprofs, the best bit is getting back from your walk, wet, cold, often drenched, a nice cup of tea, hot bath, fresh clothes, wet ones in dryer go down pub - excellent
