The Jam HouseEdinburgh
After several visits to Edinburgh Jam House I thought I would attempt a review. I have been lucky enough to attend ?Jam House? twice in the last 6mths. Since I live in Edinburgh I find myself trying different places from time to time, so rest assured I can happily compare this venue to many others within the city. This review is based on a visit that I made on the 11th April 2009. We were in a group of 7.
Location
Set in a prime location on Queen Street, the jam house is only a 10 minute walk from the city centre. Taxi?s are always nearby so you would have to wait long if that?s your preferred method of transport. In Edinburgh we are lucky enough to have 24hr bus service which runs from Waverly Bridge, this is a 10 minute walk when sober so add another 10 at the end of the night. If you able to ...
Advantages: Lots to see and do, the city contains some stunning buildings Disadvantages: The roadworks, the tramworks, the bagpipes!
Town is just as interesting historically, but visually is very different. One goes from the claustrophobia of the Old Town ? with buildings packed closely together, with the sixteenth century equivalent of high rise flats in the shadow of the castle, to the light and spacious grandeur of the New Town and its quite stunning Georgian architecture.

I don?t mean to sound churlish ? and I finally visited the castle not long after moving here ? but compared to the sheer size of Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland for instance, Edinburgh Castle looks a little bit wimpish.
Having said that, Bamburgh Castle doesn?t house any Crown Jewels, and as far as I am aware doesn ...

Advantages: Fun day out for all the family Disadvantages: Can be depressing to see the animals cooped up, steep hill
I recently visited my local zoo, which is Edinburgh Zoo, at my daughter's request. She has been here before, firstly with school about four years ago, and secondly with just her dad a few months before he died. The last time I was at the zoo was when I was younger than my daughter is now, on a school trip, which is pathetic really considering I live so near the place.
I have to admit however that I am not a huge fan of zoos. I have been to many over the years and while I appreciate the role they play in conservation, I have my doubts about the wisdom of keeping animals in captivity for humans to peer at.
My daughter, however, has no such qualms. For her the zoo offers her the chance to see animals without having to get close to them, something she loves and she has always enjoyed her trips to this zoo.
So off we went to the zoo ...
