Advantages: Fabulous diversity of ANY other capital city Disadvantages: has slums- but which city doesn't?

In up-town Kingston the area is wondeful. The houses there come in various shapes and colours, breath taking really. In Jamaica it is more conventional than not, for people to build their own houses. The country's infrastructur is still developing although it isn't extremely backwards. Alot of countries that you go to you can't drink the water, in Jamaica you are fine.

I went to Jamaica when I was 12 years old with my Mother. We didn't stay in Kingston but Ochi Rios and only spent a weekend in the rigorous capital. So unfortunately what i know of Kingston is quite limited.
When I travelled to Jamaica, like many other tourist subject to media coverage of the ghetto shoot outs and drugs in Kingston, I was quite worried. But when I actually went there, I was quite astounded by down-town Kingston, at the severe poverty in which these people live. The squalor was shocking- a shanty town based in the midst of beautiful buildings. But that was not the whole picture of Kingston.
You have an amazing nightlife culture, of Dance Hall music which has been transcending the Atlantic Ocean reaching the UK through various artists including Sean Paul.
The Jamaican people are extremely friendly and are very proud. They are often willing to help you and guide you around should you get lost.
Although marajiuana is readily available and illegal, you will come across it and a polite 'no, thank you' does suffice.

The food is great!!! You can ge our usual KFC etc but you can also taste the true flavour of Jamaica- jerk chicken which is sold by street vendors (like hotdog stands in New York City). You can get anything and everything in jamaica, from traditional Jamaican dishes such as curry and rice and peas to lobsters.
There is plent to do in Jamaica- ever fancied a helicopter ride- well why don't you go and have one?! Snorkelling is readily available and in Negril- hey had a trampoline afloat in the sea ( with a safeguard) so you could dive into the sea. There's also a place called Ric's cafe where you can dive from clif tops into the water!
Currentcy- everything in Jamaica is calculated in the US Dollars, although you can purchase things in Jamaican Dollars. Im not too sure how strong the JA Dollar is to the pound at the moment but you will find that £30 wil convert into at least $1,000 JA. Saying that the cost of living in Jamaica is much cheaper, but do be wary of taxis- you will end up sharing it with others if you pick one up in the street, and you need to keep the conversion rate in mind when you travel in taxi's as they do try to overcharge foreigners!!!
A holiday in Jamaica is a holiday in paradise, transparant waters and white sandy beaches, but Kingston shows how the harsh reality of poverty clashes with that paradise which can be for many non-holiday makers, quite a shock.
Would I recommend that you go there? Definately! I can't wait to go back there my self!
Advantages: Lot of beautiful places to see Disadvantages: has some bad areas but you never have to go near them
As soon as I stepped out at the airport - it was warm and welcoming. The landscape was beautiful and very relaxing to the eye. The food was great and the town was alive till quite late, yet contrary to what I expected, I felt pretty safe. The people were welcoming and it turned out to be a wonderful trip. The natural baths were so therapeutic and for a small fee we rented one the size of a mini swimming pool to ourselves. Up on the hills there were ... ...I would definately recommend a trip to Jamaica and will be going back to visit again - there were so many places to go - I got to see some of the historical places but still have quite a few more to see.
The dunns river falls is a beautiful freshwater fall that runs amazingly into a salt water beach - if you are brave enough you can climb it - the whit sand is so nice. Then you might want to visit Lovers leap - story has it that a slavekeeper's ...

Advantages: Weather, freshness of air, food. Disadvantages: Insects, Can be too hot at night
Im 22 now and i have been to Jamaica 12 times and i havent got bored of the place.
I dont stay in a hotel or resort which i would like to do 1 day, i stay with family; which is a cheaper alternative if your lucky enough to have family that would let you stay.
Weather: Always at least warm, hot to many, if it rains it rains hard. The freshness of the air is unbelievable, i would suck it into a big tank and condition my house air with it.
Insects: now you will need repellent and lots of it, these insects (mosquitos mainly) are very persistant, so make sure you buy long lasting repellent and cover every part of you body not just the parts that are showing
Food: The difference in food is that jamaica are famous for their jerk seasoning, which is used on pork, chicken and sometimes goat. You wont find fish and chip shops around, but ...
Advantages: Fun and relaxing Disadvantages: Small children are not able to climb the falls
