INTRODUCTION
"A traveller doesn't just see numerous different places, but gets familiarised with different cultures and the results of their sick and twisted circumstances. Kino is one of these travellers. Riding on Hermes, her talking motorcycle and companion, she searches answers to all of life's mysteries. Armed with hunting knives, revolvers, and a sharp tongue she is ready for a journey, that differs from all others before. Do you want to join an unforgettable journey?"
THE "PLOT" AND BACKGROUND
To be honest, when I read the above description of this DVD in the store I was far from convinced of its merits. THE STORY
The story explores the destructive effect of colonial capitalism on the simple goodness of a traditional native culture.

Kino, the man, is an Indian pearl diver whose skills have been past down from generation to generation.
Juana, his wife, looks after him and their new baby Coyotito. Their life is straightforward and simple, with established routines and they just about manage to get by.
When a scorpion bites Coyotito, the overweight and money-driven local doctor will not care for him without money.
Kino realises that without money he cannot care for his family as he would ...

They start out as a happy go lucky couple who struggle like their neighbours. Their simplicity of life can be detected by Kino’s thoughts ‘It was a morning like other mornings yet perfect among mornings’.
From here their lives change for the worst. Steinbeck takes no prisoners and delivers upon Kino and Jauna the ultimate punishment. When the couple visit the beach Kino goes diving and finds ‘the pearl of the world’ inside a oyster’ Word spreads like wildfire and jealousy and hatred is inflicted by both friend and foe ...
