Advantages: Alternative and cheap access to eastern Austrian skiing and beautiful Slovenia Disadvantages: Very small with sometimes awkward connections into town
...spent a year living in Klagenfurt so used this airport a lot then to get home to the UK for Christmas birthdays etc. Back then there were only flights to Vienna or Zurich, leaving me with another two flights to get to my home in Manchester. This 6 flight round-trip wasn't cheap. However, Ryanair now fly there daily from London Stansted for anything from about 99p up to around £89.99 at the most (each way).
To acess ski resorts in the eastern Austrian ... ...and easy to drive.
Klagenfurt itself is a pleasant enough town, although there's not much to do here. There is a lake on the edge of town though, which is nice, especially in summer. There's also lots of cycling and walking to be done in the region which is little visited by british tourists.
On arrival back at the airport, the car-hire / weather / plane traffic controller was also checking travellers in, so again he was abusy guy, but at least ...

Advantages: Big valley with lots of skiing Disadvantages: Mountains not linked so some bussing required
...I skied here for a couple of days a few years ago, and then went back for a holiday in 2003.
The Gastein valley runs north south between Salzburg and Villach, as does the trainline which uses the valley (before disappearing into the tunnel, to reappear some 20 minutes later in Carinthia). Bad Gastein is the biggest of the resorts here, but there is also Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein. The valley is about an hour and a half fro Salzburg airport, but equally close to the cheaper and smaller Klagenfurtairport, although this route involves putting your car on the train through the tunnel. We still prefer this way though.
Bad Gastein is a spa town (hence the 'Bad'), which is generally visited by German and Austrian (fairly well-heeled) tourists in the summer seeking the local 'cure' from the baths, along with walkers, and a mixture...

Advantages: affordable prices, lots to do, great climate Disadvantages: GTI rally is definitely best avoided
...– Tauernautobahn) and from Ljubljana (A11 Karawankenautobahn). The airport at Klagenfurt (25km from Velden) now has a lot more flights, including a route from Gatwick, and there are also airports in Graz and Ljubljana within 100 miles radius of Velden. The train station is on the mainline from Vienna to Villach, with Villach being a destination for trains to Salzburg/Munich, Italy, Slovenia and Hungary, and trains stop regularly. From the station to the lakeside it is no more than 5 minutes walk. The train takes about 4½ hours from Vienna to Velden, and is usually direct, or at most a single change, the journey being well worth doing.
What to do there:
Velden’s location, on the shore of the Wörthersee makes it a great place for watersports and there is a wide range of activities, from sailing, with small sailing boats...

Advantages: The Best-Kept Secret In The Alps...! Disadvantages: None!
...Austrian 'Gasthöfe', many of which also offer half-board accommodation, definitely represent the best value for money. We stayed at the delightful 'Haus Sonnblick', located about a five-minute walk from the Kaiserburg gondola. It was ludicrously inexpensive, costing just 40Eu per double a night. We had a large, beautifully fitted and sunny room with a balcony overlooking the main slope. The breakfast was stupendous. Our hosts were very accommodating, advising us on the local restaurants and setting out a small plate of lovely, homemade biscuits in the lobby every evening. As we went out to ski in the mornings, their two blonde, unnervingly well-behaved little children could be seen playing quietly together in the lounge room at the front.
GETTING THERE: Although the nearest airport is at Klagenfurt, we travelled to Bad Kleinkirchheim...

A flight from Gatwick - the only option for our recent holiday to Bermuda - meant we needed one night's accommodation near to the airport itself, to ensure we had no hold ups on the morning. As we would also need 12 nights parking I scoured the internet more
