Zia - the essence of authentic Greece -
Advantages: Beautiful Sunsets Disadvantages: None!!
if you win at Backgammon.....
When it comes to my girlie week away with my mum we are inadvertently a bad influence on each other - putting of any sight seeing or daytrips with the comment 'do you fancy it tomorrow' - if you have ever visited Greece you will now doubt have experienced 'GMT' - Greek Maybe Time - hence we are very, very lazy...this Greek GMT attitude rubs off on us, but why not! I work 48 weeks a year and one week of rest never hurts ... ...a few walnuts if I'm feeling adventurous, a good book and a sunlounger until lunch... a gentle stroll in search of a nice taverna serving nice mezedes and cold Mythos.. i'm made until nightfall... more Mythos, Metaxa.. etc etc.. That is until I challenged a local (god forbid) to a game of Backgammon - Tavili.... The Challenge.... If I won I promised to visit his village, Zia - teetering on the edge of Mount Dikeos - the highest mountain in Kos (by ...

The Asklepieion of Kos
Advantages: Beautiful, historic monument Disadvantages: You need to be able bodied to enjoy the best of it
The Asklepieion of Kos.
( This is the Greek spelling, but there are several adaptations of it )
Firstly,
If you enjoy history, architecture or both,The Aslepieion will interest you.
If beaches, jetskis, girls and clubs interest you more, then this article is unlikely to interest you whatsoever!
Still interested?
Ok,read on!
The Asklepieion is probably the largest ancient monument on the island of Kos.
The origins of which are said to date back ... ...facelifted by earthquakes, several times since.
The site you see today was excavated in 1902,unearthing the true scale of what you see before you now.
Part of the early structure is a temple dedicated to Apollo.
The Romans got in on the act too and the Asklepieon shows remnants of early Roman baths.
The real claim to fame of this site,is that it was used by the physician,Hippocrates as a medical and teaching centre.
It seems every man and his ...

A touch of the past, On show in th Present.
Advantages: mind blowing, just to see and touch, such great items of history Disadvantages: nothing.
KOS MUSEUM,
Found centrally of Kos town itself, at Eleftherios Square
This is a superb little archaeological museum which was built by the Italians in the 1930s to display Greek and Roman sculptures, potteries and mosaics from the island. It provides a reminder of what an important strategic and cultural centre Kos was for ancient Greece and Rome. The museum's atrium includes a mural/mosaic showing the history of how Hippocrates welcomed Asklepius, ... ...holiday, mix a visit of Kos Museum, with the Gardens of Hippocrates and finish of with the 15 century Knights Castle, all of which are in close proximity to each other, you'll have an holiday worth remembering.
It is worth noting, when leaving the Museum, take a short stroll to the Gardens, the side street here is lined with small in expensive restaurants, a great place to eat and drink, whilst listening to the 1000's of birds in the Gardens and ...

Village of zia
Advantages: Beautiful mountain village with supreb views Disadvantages: Testing drive to get there, not for faint-hearted
...the main road into the Zia, you can also see the coast of Turkey quite clearly.
Zia is located high,on the side of the highest mountain on Kos, Mount Dikeos. The thrill of the village is the scenery, which is simply breathtaking, but there is quite a brisk shopping trade, from the numerous gift shops around. There is an ample supply of Tavernas too, to cater for the hungry and thirsty. Shopping wise, there is a good selection of local produce and ... ...you have never been to Zia, then visit it, just for the sake of the jaw-dropping scenery. If you are into sightseeing, Zia is a worthwhile visit. A couple of hours spent, would easily let you see, what Zia has to offer, but hey this is Greece! What's your hurry?
The only drawback that I can think of, is the many coaches that visit. If you are in a car and you meet these coming down the mountain,These guys are on a mission and don't take hostages, ...
