Did I say breeze? Do you know, I didn’t realize how strong the wind would be – you know, the wind that blows throughout the summer months amongst the islands of the Dodecanese. As I write, I am sat out on the balcony of my apartment on the island of Kos. We have just berthed in the harbor at Kardamena and, today the wind is blowing fierce and strong. Unbelievably, fierce as the wind is, it caresses the skin like velvet – despite its power! The sky is an intense baby blue, without so much as a hint of a cloud and the temperature is building as the morning progresses. Yesterday was an intense 32o C – and I have great hopes that the temperatures today will match that with ease.
Yesterday we were moored off a beach near San Antonio. It wasn’t a harbor – more a deep inlet set amongst volcanic rocks. The inlet’s waters were quite calm, despite the wind blowing with an intensity that whipped up the tops of the water’s surface into impatient ripples and kept the surroundings too cool to stay in the water swimming for long. The 45 minute trip from San Antonio to Kardamena harbor was building up to choppy, with the boat achieving a good roll midway between San Antonio and Kardamena. However, the minute we reached the harbor, the heat hit us and we fully appreciated the cooling bliss of the wind out on the water.
We were going to sail to Nisyros but the force of the wind has steadily increased and, this morning – standing outside to eat my cornflakes, the wind was whisking the cornflakes out of my dish: so much so, in fact, that I had to go back inside. No Nisyros today – while I am a fair weather sailor, I also prefer to avoid the cross-current that gets whipped up just outside of Kardamena harbor and, in this wind, it is something I much prefer to avoid! The island of Nisyros is an absolute must and I certainly don’t want to miss it before we leave Kos completely and head north to sail along the main Greek coastline.
So, what is so special about Nisyros – apart from its natural beauty and its cultural heritage spreading back centuries that is? Well, there are the islanders themselves who are determined to preserve their folklore and traditions for future generations to enjoy. There is also the blue volcano, the interior of which can be viewed from a hidden village that clings precariously to the volcano’s side and from which you can take the most amazing photographs of the interior of the volcano.
There are also the volcanic rock formations and the natural hot springs, the pumice stones and, most of all, the people – the islanders of Nisyros for their fortitude and their foresightedness in taking what they have and developing this gift into a lucrative and exciting tourist commodity those visitors enjoy year after year. There are also the famous ‘stones of Nisyros’ – but that is another story: The Story of Nisyros coming soon.
