Lots of Destinations, All Facilities and Not Too Expensive (KRK)

Advantages: handy for the southern part of the country, good transport links, all facilities you need
Disadvantages: relatively small, no shopping emporia

...of strong Jewish connections of Krakow as well as proximity of Auschwitz). In the British Isles, apart from London, you can fly to Krakow from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol and Dublin. The number of passengers serviced by Balice has doubled between 2004 and 2005, with half of them being now carried by low-cost airlines (Ryanair, easyJet and SkyEurope are the ones that serve the British Isles) and London having the ...
...You can fly to Krakow for pretty much the cost of the taxes/charges with Ryanair (plus, of course, the price of getting to the airport in the UK and/or parking there). **Transport links** As we have been driven to the airport by a kind family member from Bielsko-Biala, I didn't have a chance to test the public transport connections to the city of Krakow, but the airport website informed me that there is two buses that serve Balice, taking about 40 ...

Wawel Cathedral

Advantages: Beautiful, reasonable admission prices
Disadvantages: ?

...we would like to see Wawel Castle. We read various guidebooks etc about this place and many of them stated that the castle is free to visit on a Monday. As the Monday was our last day and we were not flying home until late evening we decided that this is the day we would go. However, when we got there we found that it was closed (I guess that's how it's free!) but the Cathedral was open so we decided to take a look. It was still possible to explore ...
...About the Cathedral Wawel Castle and Cathedral are located on Wawel Hill in Krakow, Poland. The hill has had religious function for a long time and the cathedral in located adjacent to the castle. The cathedral has a 1000-year history and it was once the coronation site for the Polish Monarchy. Nearly all Polish Kings and national heroes are buried here and this was also the cathedral of Pope John Paul II before he left for the Vatican. The Bell ...

Certainly older than your local market!!!

Advantages: Wonderful and historic, so much to buy and see
Disadvantages: Can get crowded in summer. Archeological work limits access

The Sukiennice or Cloth Hall as its also known is the main focal point of Krakow's Market Square (Rynek Glowny). It dominates the centre of the square and most roads in the centre of the city seem to lead to it. Today it is a tourist attraction more of which later, but originally it can be dated back to the early 14th century. Throughout history it has been the main trading place for Krakow and its surroundings. This would have been dealt a blow ...
...extensive archeological work underneath the Cloth Hall. This is work on the cellars under the Cloth Hall which extend outwards underneath the market square itself. This lead to a large area around the eastern side of the Hall being closed. At the same time work has been carried out on the surface around the Hall. At the time of writing this area was still closed. However, please, please do not let this put you off. There is very little that the ...

Up and coming nightlife in the Kazimierz

Advantages: Great selection of bars/pubs/cafes/music
Disadvantages: A bit of a walk from the centre of the Old Town.

The Jewish District of Kazimierz, in the south-east corner of the Old Town of Krakow, is quickly becoming the hip and alternative neighbourhood for the city's youth. Filled with cafes and bars that open wide onto the street in warm weather, decorated with rich colours and dark wood, lit with candels and dim lamps, the main square in the district exudes an air of both traditionalism and modernity. Zinger, the oldest bar/cafe in the neighbourhood, ...
...converted Victorian sewing machines, still with moving if not functional parts. Around the corner Flower Power brings more energy to the neighbourhood, with worldly dance music, a menu of fresh and vibrant food (the carrot soup is a must), and modern cocktails. The light interior and high ceilings make this a great spot for a casual evening. In the back is a room strewn with floor pillow, low tables, and the possibility of hookahs to hire. Strictly ...

'Kracking' place to visit!

Advantages: Great Atmosphere, restaurants, shopping.
Disadvantages: Main attractions can be very busy at peak times.

...1992. *Rynek Glowny ( Main Market Square)* To get a true feel for Krakow you must initially familiarise yourself with the main market square and this is the first place we visited. Measuring 200m sq, this is one of Europe's largest medieval market squares. It is the heart of Krakow where locals and tourists gather alike. We visited in the summer so the square was buzzing with people frequenting the many cafes, restaurants, shops and market stalls. ...
...are taxi ranks around the main market square. You can take a trip around the immediate area in one of the many little open air tour buggies. These cost as little as 20 zlote for an hour and you have your own personal guide to the square and the city beyond! You can find them in the main market square near to St Mary's church. If you are feeling a little more extravagant then you may opt for a horse draw carriage, of which there are plenty to choose ...
