From our room we had excellent views over the town of Kranjska Gora. Kranjska Gora is a small town with basically one main street and a town square, but along the main street are most of the facilities you could need; post office, supermarkets, car hire, hotels, bars souvenir shops, banks, travel agency and tourist information. Part of the street is pedestrianised and leads into the square where the Church of the Assumption is situated. While staying in Kranjska Gora we went on a trip to Venice which was a very long and tiring day as it took over 4 hours each way to get there and there were no toilets on the coach!!!
We also went on a trip called taste of Slovenia, which included a train journey, a boat trip, a visit to a Slovenian wine cellar (with wine tasting) and a meal in a farmhouse restaurant. That was a much more relaxing day, the only problem was that it was extremely hot, but that was outweighed by the beautiful scenery and the cheap wine we were able to buy!
Another day we visited the Slovenian capital Ljubljana where we had a meal and then went by road train up to the castle, where we sat eating ice cream and watching the world cup!!! To get there we had to get a local bus to Jesnice and then a train to Ljubljana. The total journey time was about two hours.
The other days were spent just relaxing in the hotel and have leisurely lunches in the many cafes in Kranjska Gora. Everything is really cheap; an expensive two course meal for two of us cost only £7 or £8 and that included drinks. In the hotel the drinks with the evening meal were free and you only had to pay for tea and coffee, which cost about 30p a cup! The only things that were more expensive were clothes.
As I have already said we stayed at the Hotel Alpina, which mostly caters for English and German tourists in the summer. The hotel building is not very pretty as it is covered in grey wood, but all the windows have window boxes and it did look better than the picture in the brochure. The rooms are on 4 floors with the basic ones on the fourth floor in the eaves, but there is a lift to all floors. Most of the time it was quite quiet although there did seem to be a lot of guests staying there. Meals were a buffet arrangement and included local cusine such as Ostrich casserole! Evening meals had several choices of main course.
From the hotel we had about a two to three minute walk to the town, or in my case wheelchair ride. As the hotel was on the hillside there was a steep slope to get to the main street and back which was not easy with the wheelchair.
Whilst staying in Kranjska Gora we visited the cafes in Papa Joe Razor’s and the Hotel Prisank, which are on the main street. The food in both was very good and very cheap by our standards. I celebrated my birthday and our first wedding anniversary whilst we were staying in Kranjska Gora, so we decided to splash out and try the poshest looking hotel in the town for lunch. This was at the Hotel Lipa this was about a ten to fifteen minute walk from our hotel and next to the only bus stop in the town. The food was excellent and although more expensive than the other places, it was still cheap by our standards.
There is a museum in Kranjska Gora, but after negotiating a very step slope to get in we found that it was closed and there was no sign of any opening times. We also visited the local shopping centre which is at the far side of the town, but many of the shops were empty and closed up. The main places doing business were a supermarket which was the same as one of the ones in the main street and a Chinese restaurant.
On the whole I would recommend Kranjska Gora to anyone looking for a quiet restful holiday in the summer. If you go with a travel company there are organised trips you can go on, but it is quite difficult to get to other places using the local transport as it takes so long and only runs once an hour, but it is cheap. Car hire was around £30 a day, which is quite expensive compared to other places. We were advised that taxis were very expensive. Most of the people speak English and are very helpful. All the shops close on Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday.
Advantages: Beautiful mountain scenery, very cheap, freindly locals Disadvantages: Having to travel to do things other than ski, walk or cycle
...the beautiful countryside in Croatia, Kranjka Gora was a place that I was totally surprised with in Slovenia.
Kranjka Gora is situated in the Alps by the borders of Austria and Italy (it is possible to cycle into either country from the town) which means the scenery is excellent, and ideal if you are into walking or cycling.
The town is actually a ski resort with many slopes around, so during the summer season the town is very quiet, which is surprisingly ... ...a package tour with an English tour operator, there are bound to be lots of tours that you can go on if walking isn't your idea of a good holiday/
The trips available to us were a day trip to some huge, beautiful caves, a tour of the area, and Lake Bled, amongst many others. We also took the opportunity to hire some bikes (as I am not a fan of mountain walking!). The bikes were very cheap, but of good quality (well they have to be to so you can ...
