Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur (KL)-known as Chinatown- is endowed with a distinct character of its very own.There is loud blaring music,colourful shops,hawker stalls,restaurants,coffee shops and itinerant peddlers in this vibrant,bustling,exotic street.Flanking both sides of Petaling Street -which is known as Chee Cheong Kai in Cantonese-are shops selling just about everything from textiles, flowers,crafts,shoes,clothes,watches,CDs, and traditional Chinese medicines.
Seemingly unaffected by the growth of one stop,plush,air conditioned,shopping centres in Kuala Lumpur,Chinatown has held its ground and remains a popular hunting ground.Its also a paradise for tasty but inexpensive Chinese food. You will find Cantonese,Hainanese and Hokkien dishes here in this city within a city and at prices that will amaze you.Budget travellers staying nearby can often eat dinner for little more than a pound sterling and that cant be bad.You will also find that Chinatown houses a number of budget hotels where a room for the night need not you back more than 25 pounds .
