My boyfriend and I visited Kuredu Island Resort in May 2005. I didn't really know what to expect as the furthest I had ever gone was Tenerife but I have to say that this holiday was a once ina lifetime trip!
We paid about £1000 each for our two week, all inclusive stay in a Baech Bungalow. I've since had a good look and it seems we got a bit of a bargain on this as its not unusual now for it to cost £1500 for the same. We put this down to the Boxing Day Tsunami which devasted much of this area, destoying some islands forever.
There was no site of this when our plane touched down after a 10 hour flight in Male, the capital of the Maldives. We had opted for a seaplane transfer and although the wait time for this was quite long (about hour and half), it was truly amazing. The plan is tiny and when you fly over all the atolls and see the amazing landscape of this area (plus the fact that it only takes 45 minutes rather than the 5 hours by boat!) you understand how lucky you are as giveit another few years and many of the islands will be destroyed!
Kuredu is wonderful. When you get to your room, to be honest, you just collapse as you're so tired but you are soon pushed by curiousity to go and explore! Beware, if you go by sea plane, your luggage will follow you by boat and we saw no end of people walking round on the first day in clothes more suited to a chillly Spring day in Britain so make sure that you pack some clothes.
The restaurant is really tasty. I adore fish and probably looked a bit like one by the end of the trip because I ate loads of it but there is a good selection to please everyone. Just a note about the restaurant, you are allocated a table at the beginning of your holiday and you stay at that table for the whole time BUt during busy periods and thats seems to be all the time, if you are a couple you will probably share your table with another couple. We were lucky and the pair that we shared with for the first week were lovely but its just something to bear in mind!
Beach Bungalows are very basic. It is simply a room with a door at the back that leads into a walled open air bathroom. You have a little decked area at the front with furniture on and thats it. To be honest, we didn't really mind this as it was kept spotlessly clean and we weren't in there all the time but if you need some time away from your partner, there is no where in the room to get away to!
There is lots of activites and really this is where Kuredu excels where others fail, it is a bigger island so you can either get stuck right in to the activities or do your own thing, we chose the latter but I could see many couples there where one half liked activities and one wanted to lay in the sun. Its perfect for that!
I suppose there are a couple of bad points but you get that everywhere. We had to buy a couple of disposable underwater cameras as we got quite into snorkelling ($12 for a week hire) and they cost us $25 each! You can buy disposables in tesco for £5 so I'd recommend that! We ate so well that we didn't really want to buy anything but one day we fancied a lolly and they cost us $4 each so just be aware of it.
I would go back year after year if I could, this is a great place. All the staff are so friendly and it is so clean and laid back. Don't take many shoes just a pair of flipflops, the rest will all stay in your bag, in fact I didn't even wear shoes most of the time. Take small dollar change for tipping and take plenty of books because it is just bliss to lay in the sun reading I couldn't fault this at all. Go, before the islands go!
