Kuta Bali is known for it's nightlife more than anything these days and this is why it's often refered to by backpackers as the Ibiza of Indonesia.
Not even the Bali bombings (Muslim extremists bombed two bars in Kuta killing scores of people) several years ago managed to seriously impact Bali's tourist business.
Kuta is dominated by Australians who tend to view it the same way Brits view Ibiza and the Canary Islands; A place to get drunk and party for much less than they would at home, with great beaches and reliably hot and sunny weather.
Other than the nightclubs, bars, resturants, shops, and travel agents selling tickets and packages to other destinations in Indonesia, the only other thing Kuta really has are Surf instructing shops selling surfing lessons. The waves on kuta beach are perfect for beginners as well as pro's and a lot of people do come here solely for the surfing.
If you want nightlife and surfing then this is for you. If you are looking for anything remotely 'Indonesian' or 'Cultural' avoid like the plague!
Kuta Bali is really not for me.
