Advantages: Enormous temples, exciting centre & good wooded walks. Disadvantages: Disappointment if you let the guidebooks build it up too much & expensive.
...with gas cookers, crockery and cutlery which is free to use. There’s also drinking water so you can save money by refilling yesterday’s PET bottle before you set off. Newspapers, magazines, travel guides and, of course, fellow travellers are all on hand for tips and small talk.
I cannot comment on other accommodation, but have heard that Kyoto is a good place to try the traditional Japanese “Ryokan”, a sort of inn or traveller’s lodge. They are not to everyone’s taste. If paying through the nose to receive prissy food in small quantities while scheduling your day to a brutally regimented timetable sounds worth the luxury of these service intensive establishments then splash out for a unique cultural experience. Advantages: Great location Disadvantages: Cannot think of any
...straight to Sanjo or Shijo station from Osaka. Alight at Sanjo station and after coming out of the station, cross the bridge. You can only check in after 3pm so if you are travelling around Kyoto before that and want to find your hotel later, it is better to take the subway Tozai line to go to Kyotoshiyakushomae. - The hotel is off the main street and there are signs showing clearly where it is.
Coming out of your hotel, you are on Sanjo market street which has a lot of shops and restaurants. Shops close at 8pm. Restaurants around 11pm. There are lots of things to see (for example, camera shops, souvenir shops etc.). The whole area is the heart of Kyoto and you will definitely enjoy shopping there.
Rooms: The twin room that we booked is big enough for 3 of us. We have heard enough about small japanese hotel rooms before we went to Japan so...

Advantages: Cheap area, gorgeous attractions and temples, good for short visits! Disadvantages: Limited activity so best for -5 day visits.
...it looks anything like a candle. The station is full of shops, restaurants and a huge department store! =)
Kyoto in itself is definitely a place to go and see. Its a lot more traditional than the Tokyo side of Japan. Whilst there aren't many traditional courtyard buildings left, and its difficult to spot a real geisha (visit gion corner for that!) its very different. And travel is cheap!
Whats best is we got an all inclusive trip including Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo station to Kyoto station, and 3 nights in the New Miyako hotel for just £150 each. Its definitely worth looking up!...
