When I first got to Paris, our guide, among the standard programme, suggested to see La Defense. When we got here, after seeing the famous sites of old Paris, i was just wondering, why are we brought here. Living in the beginning of the XXJ century, it's no suprise that a lot of companies prefer to have offices in a high buildings. it's common in big cities like New York and Tokyo nowadays. Actually, no one can be surprised by that. And in this case I don't understand why is La Defense considered as a tourist attraction of Paris. This is an ensemble of modern design scyscraper buildings in the outskirts of Paris, where the offices of companies like IBM are situated. Together with this, a "new Arc de Triomphe" is situated there, also being a modern construction of steel and glass. An "architectural site" is famous and much-visited not only because of it being old. Buildings like "classical" Arc De Triomphe are created by human brain, the unique thinking of a person, his ideas and talent. They can never be repeated. Things like La Defense are functional, useful and practical, but can be created again and again using the same architectoral software. There is no soul included anywhere in La Defense.

I can't say I was that impressed by La Défense either. There was a nice view and a cool lift up it, but not much to see inside, just an art gallery and a café on the top floor.
It gave a really good straight view down the Champs Elysées all the way to the Louvre though.

Advantages: English speaking staff, Clean, Close to La Defense, comfortable, kitchenette Disadvantages: Lot of traffic in the morning as its on a busy road
Advantages: best view of Paris from the roof top, easy access, shopping center nearby Disadvantages: a little expensive to go up, not the best architectural piece in Paris
Advantages: Cheap.....ummm Cheap......and oh yeah....Cheap Disadvantages: Far away from ANYWHERE including Paris, Not very organized, Hard to navigate "from/to"
