The last time I was in Paris I happened to be staying in a hotel near La Defense. I was travelling for business, not pleasure, and therefore had not looked at a guide book about it before I arrived. When I stepped out of the La Defense metro station I had not been expecting anything and was so impressed with what I did see. A skyful of what are to me beautiful, modern, oddly-shaped skyscrapers. I thought it was a wonderful site, amazingly modern looking in a city where so much stature is placed in what is old and historic. I am delighted that I came across this place. The museum, or exhibition area, at the top of the Grande Arch is very impressive. It's also nice to get an aerial shot of Paris that ISN'T from the top of the Eiffel Tower!
The following info supplied as a comment from john.sw is worth pasting in here: What about Les Quatre-Temps – the huge shopping centre or the CNIT (Centre National des Industries et des Techniques), the oldest building in la Défence? In 1958, when the CNIT was built the architecture was considered revolutionary – it only stands on three legs, a bit like my dog! Finally, la Grande Arche is an amazing structure, designed by the Danish architect Otto von Spreckelsen. It is a huge hollow cube made of Carrara marble, slightly out of alignment with the Voie Triumphale – It is so huge that la cathédrale de Notre Dame would fit in it – including the spire! Funnily enough, although we think of la Défense as being modern, it was started only 86 years after Baron Haussmann had finished remodelling Paris!

More detail required for a VH, but I expect you know that by now! Timmy.

I stayed in the La Defenase business district in 1999, and was suprised at how modern "some" of the buidings looked, enjoyed reading this concise yet informative opinion, thanks.
