Mirabelle

Advantages: Great food and equally great ambiance
Disadvantages: bit pricey

You can see it now, James Bond hopping out of his brand new tooled up aston martin vanquish, strolling in and ordering his trademark tipple. Mirabelle was reopened in 1998 by Marco Pierre White and offers sophisticated french cooking located centrally in W1 Mayfair. In it's hay day in the 50s and 60s it was the epitome of cool and was where THE people hung out. 56 Curzon Street, 9:00pm and pulling up to the entrance I am welcomed cheerfully by the doorman who kindly opens the door and shows me the way. Satisfied diners walk past chatting about their wonderful meal. A waitress leads us to the bar where we will wait til our table is ready. As we wait gentle jazz is being played before us and already a certain ambiance has evolved. The decor is nice, classically elegant and warm and despite the enjoyable wait we are shown to the table ...

Review of Mirabelle, London

Brussels on a budget

Advantages: easy to get to, the Grand Place
Disadvantages: Mannakin Pis is dissapointing, takcy tourist shops

Question What does one do when you want to celebrate finishing the taught part of a Masters degree and want to go away but are so broke even the cheapest trip to Spain is not an option? Answer. Book a very cheap flight for a mini break to Brussels the capital of Belgium. I did this in June 2003 and I had a great time. I flew with Ryanair from John Lennon airport in Liverpool to Charleroi airport in Brussels. Or so I thought it was in Brussels. It was near enough an hour from the airport to Midi railway station. The connecting bus is a rip off at 10 euros. Since there were four of us on the way there we took a taxi that cost us 35 euros. The airfare was really cheap. It only cost £20 for a return fare including all taxes. Due to the European Parliament Brussels has cheap hotels at the weekend instead of during mid week. We were ...

Review of Brussels (Belgium)

I hope the Royals got better service than we did

Advantages: Nice looking dining room
Disadvantages: Just about everything else

Fin de Siecle is located on Brussels' famous Avenue Louise and looks very grand from the outside. It's a beautiful old building with high ceilings and you enter into a great looking lobby with some spectacular theatre-style curtains made from luxurious fabric. On the table in the corridor is a visitors' book signed by the king and queen of Belgium and the restaurant wants to make sure you know that they have friends in high places. Passing into the main dining room, you are confronted by the bar directly in front and then the dining area runs the depth of the building before high doors open onto the garden terrace - or at least they would if we hadn't turned up in the middle of an October downpour. The restaurant is a visual feast of old original features, gorgeous plaster work on the ceilings, old paintings and more lovely floor to ...
