..., and is Spain's seventh largest 'city'. It is a very popular area to shop, especially for shoes and Spanish clothing. It also has a beautiful historic centre, La Vegueta, which poses a lot of historic buildings including the home once occupied by Christopher Columbus in which he stayed when in GranCanaria, a museum which is a cathedral dating from the 15th century and the Canary Museum which houses a collection of remains from the Guanche culture from pre-Columbian times. Also Las Palmas has a casino if you fancy an interesting change, called
Casino de Las Palmas.
The beach promenade of Las Palmas is full of many different types of restaurants, to which again compete heavily to their opposition.
Las Palmas made an interesting day out, and I was able to buy many gifts there, and enjoy some good food. Certainly a recommended venture.

The Canary Islands as a group, lie just off the African coast although very Spanish in every way.
Having been to GranCanaria several times, it is where we will focus in this review.
GranCanaria
Flying into Las Palmas airport is usually a brilliant experience itself.
A few clouds will probably be sitting on the top peaks of this volcanic island - but the rest will be crystal clear - just like the sea around it.
The tourists who simply lie on the beach for the rest of their stay, are to be pitied, if undestood. Understood, because the weather is superb most of the year, the water very warm and the rest probably well-earned. But pitied because they do not know what they are missing.

GranCanaria is the third largest island in the Canary Islands of the coast of mainland Spain. It is a archipelago which is located around 210km from the northwest coast of Africa. It is a volcanic island with volcanic origin.
The islands initial inhabitants where the Guanches who arrived at GranCanaria at around 500 BC and names the Island Tamaran, however the Island was then claimed by Spain in the 15th century.
GranCanaria’s surface measures 1,560 km² and its highest peak is 1,949 meters.
