Considering recent events on the alternative route (Mont Blanc tunnel) this is the one to opt for. We stayed in the Hotel Berthod, a nice 2 star b & b, courtesy of Thomson’s Holidays.
It's a family run place that's been owned by the same people for over a hundred years, and has a nice cosy atmosphere. The rooms are traditional with private balconies and huge baths - always a big bonus when you're skiing, and there’s also a spa bath available in the basement. Thomson’s proved to be a good choice. The reps were the keenest and most fun of any of the companies we’ve skied with so far and the nights out they organised were worth the money.
The village has plenty of lively pubs, such as Bar Roma which is very good at apres ski time, having big, soft old comfy sofas and chairs dotted about the place. The American Bar, which seemed distinctly un-American apart from a couple of icons, was also a good place to have a few beers.
Courmayeur really comes out top when food is mentioned. Everywhere we ate was excellent and inexpensive and there are plenty of places to choose from. Pierre Alexis deserves a special mention, even though it's not easy to find you shouldn't miss out on this slightly more upmarket, but delicious eatery. It is quintessential Courmayeur. Olde worldy, up a cobbled lane and oozing alpine charm. Not to mention the huge wine list.
The skiing here is a bit inconvenient, as you have to reach the mountain via a cable car, then plooch through slush to the chair lifts. There are hire shops and lockers up there though, a much better option than lugging your skis up and down everyday. When we were there you couldn't ski back to the village, but I've seen rumours on the net that this has been remedied.
The skiing was ok, I'd only done 3 weeks over a 10 year period before we went here, so found some of it difficult (the snow was heavy and wet), however I don't think it would be too challenging for advanced skiers. There is always the lure of skiing the famous Valle Blanche on offer, a days skiing across into Chamonix, France.
We had lessons with Scuola di Ski Monte Bianco, they were ok but nothing special. Their English was good, but the instruction wasn’t exactly heartfelt. There was also a fair bit of queuing here at times, it's pretty impolite compared with France and that’s putting it mildly.
The resort is apparently mainly used by the Milanese, which accounts for the numerous classy boutiques, antique and gift shops in the village, and the sumptuous feasts on offer at the mountain restaurants. They were all very good both taste and valuewise, but also very busy. I'd go for a very early lunch if you want to sit on anything apart from the snow as the Italians liked to take a couple of hours over their lunch.
On that note I’ll finish by saying that the best thing about Courmayeur was definitely the food, though it has numerous good points. Please make sure you don't go half board, as you'll be doing yourself an injustice.
Advantages: beautifully scenic well maintained resort, suitable for all skiing/snowboarding levels of experience Disadvantages: Expensive, Not suitable for those with walking difficulties
...the resort of Belle Plagne, La Plagne in the French Alps for a week which started 22nd January 2005. ...partner and I skied at La Plagne for a week in April 1999. After attempting to fly to Lyon we were diverted to Grenoble due to fog so spent several hours sunbathing on the tarmac while we waited for transport to arrive. The transfer should only have been 2 hours but ended up being something like 4 as a result. This nearly did for us as we had massive hangovers due to spending Bank Holiday Friday in various Horley pubs, before departing from Gatwick.

Aesthetically, La Plagne itself isn't very visually appealing with a lot of large, purpose built hotels. Les Coches is quite a pretty village though, in spite of being mostly purpose built itself. The bars in Les Coches were mostly dead, so I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone who likes to party, but this was end of the season and it might have been ...

Advantages: Learn here Disadvantages: Peak times = peak crowds
Its virtually above the tree line, its quite ugly, but its about the best place in Europe to learn to ski. A great ski school with the most steriotypical Ecole du Ski ESF guys you will ever meet. It could be a wind chill of -50 and they will still be there with just a pair of ray-bans and a ski band. How do they smoke a fag and ski at the same time?
Can get very crowded, esp. at the main lift stations. Belle Plagne quite nice, but no night life. ... ...you want to know what altitude sickness feels like, then go up to the glacier and take the chair lift to the left. Great view of the whole planet from up there - one of the best around.
So overal, a great place to catch the skiing / boarding bug. Don't go at peak times and make sure that if you go to Belle Plagne, that you buy a little sled and slide down to the town lower in the valley - if you've had enough vino you won't notice the last lift ...

Advantages: great ski area, really cheap Disadvantages: no nightlife
I visited La Plagne in January 2001, what a fantastic ski area! Like a lot of French ski resorts that are popular with Brits
La Plagne can be expensive to get to from the UK when using the normal tour operators. Stop! The tourist office is wonderfully helpful, (laplagne.com), and they speak good English if you need to phone them. The best price I was offered came to £340 for two people sharing a studio appartment and two 6day ski passes. Throw in ... ...for only £100 all in, and you've got a holiday in a top ski resort at basement prices.
Plus, because of Ryanair's flight schedule, you can ski on the last Saturday aswell (or go shopping in St Etienne for the day - very cheap, great bars & cafes).
Only drawback? Absolutely no apres-ski and next to no nightlife. But if that's what you're after, go to Austria! ...

Advantages: Good skiing Disadvantages: Make sure you're in the right part of la Plagne
La Plagne's great - I've been there 3 times now. - The nightlife isn't as good as at Val d'Isere or Meribel, but there are enough bars to keep you going. - There's a reasonable chance of getting ski-in, ski-out. - The shops aren't bad. - Skiing there is great - the area is huge and there are plenty of runs for all abilities. If you are interested in going out in the evening, make sure you're in Plagne Centre.
- Plagne 1300 is low (so even if you ...

This review is on Le Cervin Apartments in Plagne Soleil at 2050M in the resort of LaPlagne French Alpes.
I am also going to review the whole area of LaPlagne in a different review as I think it will be to long to put both together. In the other review I will price items and talk about areas other than Plagne Soleil.
Well where to start, oh yes. I must say it was not our accommodation of choice so forgive me for the negatives but we were supposed to have a fully catered for chalet in Plagne Centre.
Le Cervin as I have already mentioned is in the resort of LaPlagne in France which is made up of 7 varying sized areas.
The Cervin is partly private and partly public available block, when I say this I mean that some are run by Odlays and others are privately owned all in the same block. There are about 100 rooms in the block. The north ...
Advantages: Huge Ski Area-Huge bar area! Disadvantages: French Airports!
One of teh most famous resorts in the Alps, Les Arcs is a purpose built resort on 3 levels. The 3 Villages at 1600, 1800 and 2000 have individual qualities which make them unique.
1600- near to bars and shops, obviously lower down the mountain , but more traditional than the other 2. Also nearer to the beginner slopes which makes it ideal for the family.
1800- Party Party Party! Bars and clubs, floodlit skiing.
2000- the highest and the best snow, purpose built this is a modern place with ample bars and restaurants, many ski in /ski out residences.
Having stayed in all 3 places over the past few years all offer fantastic skiing and link brilliantly around the mountains and with the New link lift accross to LaPlagne making this the biggest ski area in the alps (now bigger than 3 valleys)
Always seems snow sure ...

Le Shuttle - I have not actually done Le Shuttle (the car service from Ashford-Sangatte) but have yet to hear any problems about it from family members who have used it.
Disneyland Paris - Services operate to Disneyland Paris (about 60km east of Paris) from London Waterloo and Ashford International direct to Disneyland Paris.
Ski Train - There is now a service from London Waterloo-Bourg St Maurice (close to LaPlagne) which goes overnight, which is great for people skiing in the French Alps
