I went skiing for the first time to the resort of Belle Plagne, La Plagne in the French Alps for a week which started 22nd January 2005. The tour operator for the trip was Neilson and it cost £350 for 7 days self catering in the 'Les Constellations - Themis' apartments, including return flights from Manchester to Lyon, and transfers.
As this review is of the resort, I will not babble on with my comments of the tour operator or the accommodation, I will comment on my thoughts of Belle Plagne as a novice skiier.
The Belle Plagne Resort sits at 2000m within the La Plagne Resort in the French Alps. For the first three days of my trip, the snow constantly fell creating an awesome daily scenic view to my ski virgin eyes. However, with the wide areas of untouched powder snow, I am sure weathered skiiers appreciated the natural beauty of the resort also.
I participated in the 6 day beginners ski school with 'ESF''. The ski school cost approx £200 including ski pass. The ski school instructor, Ludy, spoke excellent english and was very professional yet fun! The equipment hire cost approx £60 for the duration. The hire shop staff were very helpful and the equipment was all in good condition.
The runs that I experienced were well maintained and there were plenty of resort staff nearby ready to help.
The resort itself is split into 3 descending levels - The Top Level - Pizza Takeaway, Ski School Offfice, Spar, K2 Restaurant, Ski Shop Middle Level - Beauty & Fitness Centre, Ski Shop/Hire, Spar, small selection of bars and resturants, various shops, cable car to 'La Roche de Mio' Lower Level - Bowling, Ski Shop/Hire, Spar, small selection of bars and resturants, various shops, cable car to 'Belle Cote' Due to sever lack of lifts, and even more severe lack of working lifts, the resort would not be suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.
The apres-ski was good. My only problem was the prices!!! A two course meal costs approx 25-35 Euros, a beer 5 Euros and spirits 7 Euros!!! I particular enjoyed the 'Saloon' which is open until 4am, plays popular english music and has horse saddle seating.
Overall, I would recommend Belle Plagne to all skiing levels, in particular to beginners who are looking for an excellent ski school in a friendly well maintained ski resort. However, it would not be suitable for those looking to ski on a tight budget.
