Yes, La Plata means the silver but it can also means the money, and it was quite right during some time for this city to be called like that. La Plata is the capital of Buenos Aires Province, and after it was founded in the 1880's it was the heart of the whole country.

Although now the heart and soul is in the Federal Capital, called Capital Federal, a very original name... La Plata kept it's interesting life. It's about 56 km southeast from the Fed. Cap.

La Casa de Gobierno, that is the Government House, is were the Governor "works", head of the city, and is one of the most impressive buildings.
Another one is the Natural History Museum. And although their fossil collection is not very organized is a massive one.
In the middle of Moreno Park, the main one in the city is La Plata's Founding Stone. A monument that represents the city's origin.
Every major city in Argentina got their Cathedral; here the Cathedral is in a neo-gothic style and shows lots about the cologne times that lived. The beautiful stained glass is a must in the city. It also has a museum but it doesn't say much.
The Teatro Argentino is a new building that replaced the old theatre that was destroyed by a fire. The locals assure that the theatre was one of the best in the world and of course much better than the new one.
The Pasaje Dardo Rocha, named after the city's creator, is the cultural centre of the city. There's not really much going on there, but it's probably because of the hard economic situation that the country is living.
There's also a Museum called Bellas Artes but in my opinion is there mainly because a major r city is supposed to have an art museum.
There are also two more main public buildings that deserve a look, the Palacio de la Legislatura, which is the Parliament and it's located opposite of Moreno Park, the Palacio Municipal. Is impressive because the building is in a German renaissance style while on each side there are modern towers.
My favourite place is called La Republica de los Niños, that would be the Kids Republic. It's a scale-model city that Evita Peron sponsored for educational and enjoyment purposes. It's great to be in there and find the Parliament House in a child size! The little city has all the main public buildings, and then there is the fairy tale section. The construction was so peculiar that includes different architectural styles!
La Plata is not a very tourist place, so is not that well known but if you are planning to absorb the Argentinean city culture is a nice place to go. Besides, you cannot get lost the street names are in numbers!
Advantages: Lots of History Disadvantages: Not for non history lovers
If you visit Argentina, I think that it worth crossing the Rio de laPlata (River Plate) to visit Uruguay. And colonia is a good option.
It takes an hour or two, depending on the ferry you choose to cross the river. Buquebus is the name of the company that organizes this travels that can also include a lunch in a farm, or in a restaurant inside the old city, or even a night in a hotel. The price for a whole day including the meal and the tour is about 40 pounds, depending on the menu for the lunch (the farm option is more expensive).
Colonia used to be the old capital of the country. The complete name is colonia Del Sacramento, a catholic name for one of the eldest spanish/portuguese colony in South America. How old are we talking about? The portuguese Manoel Lobo founded it in 1680 and then although Portugal and Spain agreed ...

coastline (they are better than Copacabana or Ipanema in Brazil). The sand is white, thin and sometime phosphorescent.
The coast id divided in two categories: "Brava" is called the one facing the ocean, "Mansa" the one on the Rio de laPlata estuary.
Two are the beaches most interesting.
"Playa Solanas" is just at the foot of Sierra de la Ballena and it is characterized by dense sand, smooth and not deep waters, in other words the right place for the ones that like sun tanning in a quiet surrounding.
Instead "Playa Montoya" has grainy sands, it is home for beach-volley and is also an heaven for surfers.
And, of course, we can't leave Punta del Este without a visit to few of its museums.
"Museo Mazzoni" is located in a 18th century building that was belong to an Italian immigrant nobleman, Don Francisco Mazzoni. The museum has several ...

The flight to Buenos Aires, into Ezeiza Airport, is a long one from the UK, however due to the +3 to +4 hour time difference the timing of most of the major airlines is very convenient. For example British Airways leaves at around 10pm and lands in Buenos Aires at 7am the next day five days a week.
There are numerous taxis available outside the airport, with the journey into the centre of BA taking around 40 minutes and costing around $30.
To many Argentines, their capital city is synonymous with the country itself, and indeed 40% of the population live in the city's massive, sprawling suburbs. Buenos Aires is situated on the banks of the Río de laPlata in the Federal Capital district, and not, as one would expect, in Buenos Aires province. Unlike most South American cities, whose architectural styles reveal a strong Spanish ...
