Advantages: Coffee houses and environmentally friendly Disadvantages: somewhat small downtown
...I went to Austin, Texas in October and I have to say it was nice but I've been to better. I feel the city has a whole lot of great stuff to offer, such as fantastic thrift stores, really cool coffee houses, and great music. But, the city layout is not really all that exciting. It felt like a university town. really easy to get around by bike in the university area otherwise you need a car.
However, if you really would prefer to travel by bike they are very bike friendly. There are some serious hills to travel up but could be fun traveling downhill ( a great workout). There is street called Congress that has many live venues to visit with great Blues and Rock. This was particularly my favourate area in Austin. Also, there is a street called 6th street that has clubs open and the street is fiilled with people on the weekend. But, it...

Advantages: It is the capital of Texas Disadvantages: You might not want to visit anywhere else
...my favorite city in the US: Austin, Texas.
History
Austin is a relatively young city in comparison to other cities in Texas. Located on a gentle bend in the Colorado River the Spanish were the first to set up temporary missions. It was in 1830s that the first Anglo settlers arrived and called the settlement Waterloo. In 1839 this town was named the capital of the new Republic of Texas and was renamed Austin after Stephen F. Austin, “The Father of Texas”. At this time the population of the town numbered just over eight hundred.
Over the years Austin grew in importance for it was the center of Texas politics. It also became home to the University of Texas. There was some controversy about its location since the idea of having students so close to lawmakers might have a detrimental influence on their morals.
Today Austin...

...What a surprise! Living in the UK, I had always imagined Texas to be full of saloon swinging doors and tumbleweed - until I stumbled upon Austin. I have never visited such an optimistic city where the quality of life is absolutely fantastic. Visit the State Capitol, which is an exact replica of the Captitol in Washington DC - but a foot taller! A night out on 6th Street is fantastic too. The whole city bursts with life at night and is helped by the fact that Austin is home of the Unversity of Texas! If you feel like getting out of the city for an afternoon, go and visit the 'Oasis', a wonderful tiered open air restaurant on the side of a hill overlooking Lake Travis - it's like you're overlooking the greek islands. For a real Texas cullinary experience - the Saltlick B-B-Que in Driftwood (about 40 mins away) is a must. Bring your own...

My dad used to love his roses and had some beautiful hybrid teas. They're the type that have lovely tight buds and keep their shape well as they open. I can remember a fabulous velvet red rose, a pretty lilac rose called "Blue Moon" and, what's probably... more
One of the things which disappointed me about the first Austin Powers film was that the soundtrack was disappointing. They have made up for that second time around, and in a big way. Furthermore the tracks fit in with the 60s feel of the film... more
