Until the middle of the XIXth century in which Barcelona started to grow broking its city walls, the city extended no further than the hexagon of the 15th century. During these centuries the only wide street at the heart of the city. The name La Rambl derives from the Arabic "ramla" meaning "sandy ground" because initially the place was a stream.
La Rambla starts in Plaça Catalunya (Catalonia Square) and ends in the monument to Columbus,. During this route, the avenue receives five different names each one describing a section of the street: 1) The first one is called La Rambla de Canaletes due to the fountain named "Font de les Canaletes", found there since ancient times. It seems to be like the Fontana di Trevi in Roma without throwing a coin "everyone who drinks from this fountain will subsequently keep returning to Barcelona". It is also a meeting point for Barcelona F.C. fans when they win a title (no much celebrations in the last years).
2) The next section is known as La Rambla dels Estudis (Studies) because of the Estudi General (medieval university). Don't try to look for it, the was suppressed by Philip V after the War of Succesion and it was demolished in the XIX th century.
3) Going down will enter the stretch known as La Rambla de les Flors (Flowers). This was the only place where flowers were sold in the XIXth century.
4) The next one is La Rambla del Centre, also known as La Rambla dels Caputxins, because of the old house of Capuchin friars. This part of the Ramblas used to be a curious mixture of people from the lower classes and the well-off going to the Opera (Great Theater of Liceo).
5) And last but not least there is la Rambla de Santa Mònica (Saint Monica). At the end of that there is the Columbus monument where you can take a lift to the top of the monument and take a look to the city's seaside.
In my opinion it is a good route to move from Plaça Catalunya to the Maremagnum (the new seaharbour). The three visits are mandatory if you want to capture the city's atmosphere.
Unfortunately, robberies are more common than desired (specially by night). Take care of your bags while you enjoy the visit.
