Luanda, just say no!!

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Health Risk

I work just off the coast of Luanda on a bp fpso (oil boat). Each trip i've experienced to date has been nothing more than disgraceful. For starters, the length of time to get through passport control is a joke, on a good day it will take you about 3 hours. Secondly, the attitude of the locals leaves allot to be desired and they are all looking for extra money, one guy even asked me for some dollars to get an entry form!! Thirdly, the general hygiene of the place is shocking, its an eye opener to say the least, the majority of local guys working offshore also have no regard to personnel hygiene, every trip i get a bug within the first week and feel rotten for the remainder of the trip, i'm now in the process of a career change. And last but not least the homeward journey is just as bad as the entry, one of my work party was rejected ...

La Chope

Advantages: Great food, reasonable fixed price menu
Disadvantages: None

On our recent trip to the Loire Valley Mr Tart and myself arrived in Tours quite late on our first night. We drove down to Tours from Paris. We were going to stop for something to eat on the way but in the end decided to make our way straight to Tours and get settled in the hotel and then find something close by. A couple of minutes from our hotel we came across this place and were really glad that we did. LOCATION: La Chope is located at 25 Avenue Grammont. Our hotel was on the same road so we just came across it. It is about a ten minute walk from Tours? old town. The restaurant doesn?t stand out and the sign is not particularly bright so make sure you look out for it. THE EXPERIENCE: La Chope (which apparently translates as the tankard) is actually a fish restaurant. I?m not really a fish person (ok, that ...

La Boqueria - Barcelona's Technicolour Market

Advantages: A colouful and compelling sight, pick up some tasty food
Disadvantages: You may not be able to take some of it home

Situated just off Las Ramblas, Barcelona?s Boqueria (or more correctly Mercat de San Josep) market is one of the city?s most popular tourist attractions. I think it says a lot about the enduring attraction of food markets that the Boqueria is still so popular in spite of the fact that our supermarkets now stock excellent produce from all over the world and that air travel and border restrictions have made it more difficult to take fresh produce home from trips abroad. When I first visited the Boqueria I was filled with excitement at the array of colourful fresh produce ? fruit and vegetables, herbs, fish and shellfish, meats ? fresh and cured, bread, nuts and dried fruit ? on sale at the market but over time, as I have traveled more widely, "La Boqueria" has lost a little of its gloss. You?ll find the Boqueria quite easily just off ...
