A rare find - a quiet hotel in New Delhi

Advantages: Calm professional staff, quiet setting
Disadvantages: If you can't get it at a bargain rate, it's not worth the price.

I could be sure that - despite the rather reasonable price of around £65 for the night - it would be of a good standard. Japanese tourists don't DO 'slumming it'. I believe it's now no longer part of the Nikko group but I can't entirely confirm that and the new website shows no discernable changes to the hotel where we stayed. Arrival and Check-in The night before we'd been with our tour group at the horrible Jaypee Siddarth in the north west of the city. We booked a taxi to take us to the Metropolitan which took about 15 to 20 minutes. I wasn't expecting anything too marvellous but when we arrived we were quite impressed. To put it into context it's nowhere close to the sublime gorgeousness of the Imperial but it beat the pants off the Siddarth. The blast of air conditioned air as we entered the lobby was more than welcome since ...

One of the world's best hotels - in Delhi!

Advantages: A landmark hotel
Disadvantages: It's a long way from home

hotels for the extra nights that weren't covered by our tour. It soon became apparent that even though we were travelling at a time of year when nobody with half a brain would choose to go to Delhi (i.e. second half of June with the monsoon on the horizon and temperatures up around 40 degrees) the options were limited. We could either pay £10 and stay in a place with hot and cold running cholera, bed bugs and well-shared sheets, or pay £80-plus for a run of the mill 'international standard' hotel. Exodus wanted £95 per night for the 'very average' hotel that would be home for part of our stay but the location wasn't great and I thought the price was too high. At the back of my mind I was hankering after a bit of a blow-out at a fancy hotel but wondering if I could really justify the cost. So I read dozens of reviews, weighed up the pros ...

Review of Imperial Hotel, New Delhi

The Accidental Tourist

Advantages: Beautifully yet honestly written, vivid characters and a quietly compelling story
Disadvantages: No grand plots to speak of, requires your full attention.

Having experienced something of a bad run with good books lately (I'd just read 4 extremely good but very depressing books in a row) I decided that I was in need of a little lighthearted literary 'therapy'. What I wanted was a book that would entice, enchant and entertain me - absorb me with its characters, endue me with wonderment and generally restore my faith in the goodness of humankind. My wife, bless her cotton socks, knew just the book.. And so with much expectation (and perhaps a little trepidation) I began 'The Accidental Tourist'. I mean, with a title like that it's gotta be fairly light hearted right? On page one I'm introduced to our central protagonist, Macon Leary. Macon is a reclusive, insular, anally retentive, emotionally inept, socially incompetent, compulsive worrier who hates traveling and writes travel ...
