I went on my first holiday aboard in 20yrs last year, with my sister, her husband, and their family - to Portugal, we stayed in an apartment complex a few miles out of Lagos -
We were only there for a week and had a day trip into Lagos - we caught the local bus, which was air conditioned, but was a bit rickerty, the journey took us about 40mins, through very narrow streets in places. At one point we thought the bus would not make it, but it limped and got us there. It cost us the equivalent of £2.00 each on the bus.
Once there the main highway boarding along the coast and the marina is very wide and very busy, there are many crossing along the road, which you can us to cross safely and go into the town.
We walked along the front, where you go to many little coves and swim in the sea - which is the most beautiful blue. One of the coves is called Students Cove,
this is occupied through the summer months by the students who sleep on the beach.
Continuing our walk along the side of the Marina, every couple of feet there is someone selling a boat trip. They like to barter, after walking past them on a few occassions throughout the day, we took a trip there were nine in our group and we got a boat trip around the Algarve for aprrox £5.00 ahead, normally the trip is 2hrs long, but we took the trip in the afternoon and were out for over 3hrs. This trip was well worth the money, you went round the Algarve and saw such beautiful scenery, it also included going into a smaller boat and going through the caverns and for those that wanted to you could swim in the sea. I will warn you though, buy a hat, as there was a slight breeze I never gave it a thought and ended up with sunstroke, not an experience I would like to repeat.
The Marina has a wonderful array of boats of all sizes, the water is so clear you can see all the fish swimming around. There are more shops here for you to look at, at little more expensive than in the town, also the boat trips cost more here. There are public toilets here, which are kept very clean, but I must say I was not keen on the frosted glass doors. There was also a wonderful cocktail bar here, which you have to try - they were not too expensive but when you are sitting looking over all those boats, well you just have to have a go! (they did do none alcohol ones as well as some very potent alcoholic cocktails). They also provided an extensive menu from a cooked breakfast, sandwiches, bagettes and meals, all reasonably priced.
Around the town there are lots of small cafes, all serving food all day. They all serve the local fish dishes, but not to worry if you don't like fish (I'm not a fish lover), there are alternatives, pasta, steak, burgers etc.
Lagos also has an extremely large fish market, for anyone to walk through, buy or just look - wow that stunk, but an amazing variety of fish, for you fish lovers.
Me being a fat 43 yrs old, I found the streets a little steep, but theres no rush here, just take it steady and they are a piece of cake. For those of you that like shopping, there is a big market, lots and lots of little shops, the streets seem to intertwine, if you walk up the main street, every few yards there are little streets coming of it on the left and the right - all with more shops and cafes - there seemed to be an awful lot of antique shops and shops specialising in leather goods - I got a great new bag and purse.
When you reach the top there is a pretty church and thats also where you find the police station if you need it.
I have enclosed some pictures for you to see for yourself, which I could have put on more as it is such a beautiful place.
We didn't find it expensive at all, most meals averaged around £4 - £7 per person depended what you had.
There were even street musicans playing panpipes, very relaxing.
All in all it was a beautiful place, the locals there are very friendly and really helpful. Majority of the people spoke excellent english.
During our time in portugal there was a fire, an oxygen cyclinder blew up the doctors car, whilst outside a house. We were just down the road in a small resturant, we saw the community pull together, the staff bought the people from the house inside and looked after them whilst the fire service did there bit. fortuneately no one was hurt, and only smoke damage. That community really pulled together to help this people. Thats a wonderful thing.
To get back to our apartment we took a taxi, prices once again can be negotiated for the 9 of us we had two taxi's worked out approx £5.00 per head.
I would recommend visiting, we all have a fantastic time, my sister and her family love it so much they go every year. One day I would like to go back, but at the moment it is a very happy memory.
