I try to visit Lahore about once a year, we have family there but I really don't like staying with them - I always feel like a burden. This year I thought about staying at one of the fine hotels in the city, including the Avari, Pearl Continental ot Holiday Inn. I was quite surpised at the prices for these hotels, I mean sinlge would be costing me upwards of 50pounds a night, I know people there who don't earn that in a month! Needless to say, i stayed with the family. I'm basically going to focus on shopping and eating, with some tips
The odd thing about the hoels was the cost of food, this was more my cup of tea, i mean a luch buffet for 300ruppees (£3.20) i could happliy do with and this wasn't no cheap crusty expired food buffet but a proper international standard one....lovely Apart from the hotels food, i regularly went to (not 100% sure on the name) the Gulberg food street, which had many restaurants serving all sorts of international foods - oh and there was even a Nandos! I did also venture out to the 'legendary' food street, this was basically an open food court with mainly Pakistani foods, the prices were very reasonable - a few pound for me and my collegue, but to be on the safe side i don't thing i'd go there again, not personal safety more of the hygine site, it was open and there were cats and flies everywhere. Great if you want to experience local cuisine and the atmosphere and are really brave! So overall the food was never an issue - its a great city for any kind of eating regardless of your buget.
near to where i was staying was the Fortress Stadium, this was like a stadium with shops circurling it (I was told inside the staduim there were events through the yr - i'd missed it) here they sold everything from clothes, food, to copied DVD's (more on that later) Its a relatively secure area with a visible police presence and a Mcdonalds. I did almost all the shopping there and the prices, very resonable - dvd's 1pound, asian suits 5-10pounds (can be more) music cds 80p. Haggle hard coz they know a tourist from a mile away
So overall food - excellent, shopping - excellent
All I'd say is try to avoid it in Ramadan and Muharram (Dec & Feb this yr) and the summer months can be a bit rough with mosquitos and very high temps - AC is not standard everywhere. Also in the winter it can get very nippy, i thing it was down to single figures this year
The worst part of the trip is always cusoms at Lahores new airport, the guys there are jerks and will ask for money to allow CD's and DVD's though, they go through your bags - keep small expensive items on your person or in hand baggage where u can see them. I mean I've had to pay about 20pounds this last trip for my 'stash' which isnt' too bad but it still annoyes me.
Lahore is an awsome city for shopping, culture and food - I know i didn't mention culture but i didn't get a chance to see much this year, I will follow this review up after my next trip there.
Lahore is one of the most historic cities in Pakistan, providing an ideal blend of three cultures, that of old Pakistan, that of colonial Pakistan and that of modern day Pakistan. The highlight of ancient Pakistan in Lahore is without doubt the Red Fort. Although less known than it's Indian counterpart the fort is equally impressive in every way. There still remains many buildings and traditions, such as the Rotary club from colonial Pakistan. A ...

Advantages: Knowledge about history. Disadvantages: none.
I have visit Lahore many times since i born.Lahore is undoubtedly ancient. Legend had it that it was founded by Loh, son of Rama, the hero of the Hindu epic, the Ramayana. Some others think that the name means Loh-awar, meaning a "Fort as strong as Iron". It waxed and waned in importance during the Sultanate. But, Muslim rule began here when Qutub-ud-din Aibak was crowned in Lahore in 1206 and thus became the first Muslim Sultan of the subcontinent. ... ...1598. He built the massive Lahore Fort on the foundations of a previous fort and enclosed the city within a red brick wall boasting 12 gates. Jahangir and Shah Jahan (who was born in Lahore) extended the fort, built palaces and tombs, and laid out gardens. Jahangir loved the town and he and his wife Noor Jahan are buried at Shahdara. Shah Jahan was born in Lahore and added buildings. The last of the great Mughals, Aurangzeb (1658-1707), gave Lahore ...

Advantages: As ceremonies go, it's unique Disadvantages: It's not the photographic spectacle that many people want and it goes on a very long time.
The daily flag lowering ceremony at the Wagah border crossing between India and Pakistan is one of the world's most bizarre displays of mutual dislike combined with pure theatre and is a great example of nationalism and pride. Every day, come rain or shine, war or peace, the border guards of India and Pakistan go through the motions of closing the gates that join the two countries, under the watchful eyes and with the loud support of thousands of spectators. It also makes great television and has been publicised by Michael Palin in his Himalaya series and was included in Sanjeev Bhaskar's India series a couple of years ago.
Where is it and how do you get there?
The closest town to Wagah from the Indian side is Amritsar and from the Pakistan side it's Lahore. We visited the border whilst staying in Amritsar and, since there ...
Advantages: Theres always something to do Disadvantages: Poverty
200Rs that is £2. Even clothes in Pakistan cost from 50p upwards which is great/
Alongside this travel expenses are not high at all but the rush on vans and Lorries in horrendous. We have got a family car in Pakistan therefore I was able to drive wherever I wanted there. The petrol was very cheap, I think it was 5-10p per litre therefore I didn't feel guilty when I was joyriding. Once I went to fill my tank up with petrol, they even cleaned my windscreen for me, how good is that.
The food in Pakistan is very traditional and includes lots of spices, masala and a touch of their own specials. It was prepared very well in the hotels I went to and the service given was amazing. They even give you a gift hamper when you visit their restaurants (if you're lucky).
The Lahore kulfi is like an ice cream but made with real milk and nuts. It ...

CULTURE AND RELIGION
Pakistan is the homeland of Muslims. Islam is the official religion. Although majority of citizens are Muslims, its culture is called as Mixed-Culture. National language of Pakistan is Urdu, which is widely spoken and understood, however the official language is English. Educated people easily speak and understand English language. I have been living in Pakistan since 1976 (that is my birth year), I attended English school and was taught English like a primary language although my mother tongue is Urdu. Other languages of Pakistan include ...
