The Laing Art gallery is easily one of the best galleries I have visited. It has a fabulous display of art on Tyneside, with models of northern people from all ages, photos, videos and even a model of the fabulous Tyne Bridge! It was recently home to the Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition, and also has exhibitions from local artists, as well as international exhibitions. It is inexpensive to visit,(the gallery is free and a nominal fee is charged for special exhibitions) and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The cafe is clean, the waitresses helpful and on the walls are beautiful paintings, and there are also cases of sculptures and artifacts. I recently took a friend from Australia who was here on holiday, and she was very impressed. On the main staircase is a fabulous painting of the Tyne Bridge as it was being built. For anyone with a love of art, or a strong pride in Newcastle, I would highly recommend visiting the Laing art gallery.
Advantages: Free, Great art Works Disadvantages: Gift shop is expensive
...an under 5s area, the Laing art gallery has to be one of the best galleries i've been to. Boasting a whole room of world wide watercolours and 18th to 19th century collection which contains William Holman Hunt's 'Isabell and the pot of Basil', Paul Gauguin's 'the Breton sheperdess' and my favourites John Martin's 'The Bard' and destruction of 'Soddomah and Gommorah'
It recently had a selection of art on Roman Goddess Venus, including Picasso's and ...

Advantages: Compact city with plenty to see and do Disadvantages: Binge drinking culture
Keep to the imposing Victorian central train station, providing a stark offset to the very modern refurbishment of St James Park (55,000 seats). If your driving in by car over one of the many bridges this is a real landmark perched atop of a hill it's an imposing site indeed.
Other things to do in the centre of town include a visit to Laingartgallery, Discovery museum, Sage Gateshead, The Gate entertainment complex and a very good China town.
Newcastle is really accessible, the airport is 20mins away by Metro no fuss! Other nearby attractions include Wallsend - home to Segedunum (Hadrian's Wall) Tynmouth and Whitley Bay (great beaches but the water is freezing!) Keilder Water and a host of National Trust sites such as Belsay, Gibside, Cragside and more.
Visit Newcastle, you wont be disappointed. ...
