So Spa, So Good

Advantages: Stunning scenery, variety of activiites, great wines
Disadvantages: Frequent storms in summer, can get very busy

Forget Budapest, Lake Balaton is Hungary's chief tourist location attracting hundreds of thousands visitors each year, from Hungary and abroad. And its hardly surprising given the variety of activities available on and around Europe's largest freshwater lake.

LOCATION/TRANSPORT/GEOGRAPHY

Lake Balaton is situated some 50 miles south west of Budapest and measures about 77 kilometres in length. Its width is anything between ...
...a liitle further from the lake as desired.

Once at the Lake there are plenty of opportunities to hire bicycles or go pony trekking to get around. There are numerous boat services which can take you across the lake or up or down as you wish. The area is especially popular with hikers and walkers.

Lake Balaton - Hungary now with Ryan Air

Advantages: Cheap flights
Disadvantages: Boring

Lake Balaton, Hungary. "Where the b.hell's that?" you may enquire. Well look at a map of Hungary and the lake sticks out like a racing dog's ……well let's be polite - its very obvious on the map, It is the largest fresh water lake in Central Europe and is about 48 miles long east to west and between 3-9miles north to south. What on earth made me decide to write about this place I'm not quite sure, but one thing is sure, I passed it 18 yrs ago and ...
...Germans had taken over the lake as their own, even back in 1989 and my very recent visit has confirmed my suspicion that it is now almost a province of the fatherland . I decided to read previous Ciao reviews, the last I could find was 4 yrs ago, and definitely families enjoyed it - in summer it is hot, apart from the odd cyclonic storm to clear the air of bratworst. The lake is clean, tide-less and apparently according to one review, it is good ...

I will never forget the taste of pigman-schnitzel

Advantages: Very cheap, very pretty
Disadvantages: Surly locals, scary (though tasty) food

...~~BALATON~~ Not only is Lake Balaton the largest lake in Central Europe, it is also surrounded by some of the most wonderfully-named towns anywhere. Between Szigliget in the south-west and Szekesfehervar in the north-east are a whole series of towns guaranteed to twist your tongue into new and unfamiliar contortions. The strangeness of these names to your average Englander is due to the fact that the Hungarian language is unrelated to any other ...
...Hungary is a landlocked country, Lake Balaton functions as its seaside. The lake is about 48 miles long and has roughly the shape and orientation of an acute accent – running southwest to northeast – pointing towards Budapest. The lake lies in the western half of the country, with the eastern half taken up by rolling grasslands. Most parts of the lake are about 10 feet deep, which makes it reasonably safe (though somewhat muddy) for bathing. ...

great hungarian experience

Advantages: freshwater lake for hours of fun
Disadvantages: bit limited if you get rain

I visited lake balaton, hungary last week in june and first week in july last year 2006 and i was so taken by the resort that we are going again this summer. We stayed in a b&b in a little resort just outside of siofok, which is on the south side of the lake called balatonfurdur and can i say it was fantasic me,my husband and our two children had a brilliant time. Lake balaton has one of europes biggest freshwater lake, which you can swim in between ...
...is the water only reaches your waist at the deepest parts meaning the kids love it. all along the resort is little restaurants and bars which serve up fantastic hungarian and other european dishes and the drinks are so cheap,a pint of bear being the equivalant to 50p english pence. there are also plenty of bus companies doing sight seeing tours to budapest, pecs and other beautiful sites. It does get very busy between june july but the lakeside ...

Lendava - a pleasant surpise in Eastern Slovenia

Advantages: Interesting castle, Jewish history, cheap, good food, spa excellent for swimming
Disadvantages: Remoteness, language can be an issue

. Just to the south of the town is a petro-chemicals plant and refinery, which is one of the main employers. The firm is the sponsor of the local football team (Nafta Lendava) which has an incongruously impressive modern stadium for such a small town, and which currently play in the Slovenian first division. = WORTH A VISIT? = If you are in Prekmurje or even Lake Balaton in Hungary an hour?s drive away, I would recommend a visit. A motorway to Maribor, Slovenia?s second city, is under construction, which will improve access no end. Language might be an issue, as while most people speak Slovene and Hungarian, not all speak any German, and even fewer speak any English. We came here on the off-chance as we were staying in the countryside 10 minutes drive away, but it was a pleasant surprise. I wouldn?t say make a huge detour to ...

Beyond the capital

Advantages: Cf review
Disadvantages: Cf review

If somebody had already been to Hungary or had heard about this country, then their first reaction is related to Budapest, the capital with two million inhabitants. It is a huge European city with a real metropolitan dynamism that you can hardly find in any other cities of the country. This also comes from the centralised nature of the transport system and the whole structure of the country. However, this doesn’t mean that there are no other interesting places to see beyond the capital. In an non-exhaustive way, here are some suggestions for your tourist destinations Natural water - Lake Balaton, Tisza, Velence, Fertöd and the spas: Hungary is full of natural fresh water. Even if it doesn't have a sea, the "Hungarian sea" is still one of the most important tourist attractions of the Hungarian landscape. The biggest fresh water ...
