An Amazing Place!
Advantages: Beautiful, Peaceful, Lots of things to do. Disadvantages: None
I absolutely love the Lake District - I don't live too far away (about an hour and a half), so have the odd (long) day trips there, but have also holidayed for the odd week with family staying at the fantastic White Cross Bay - which I can highly recommend if you are thinking about visiting the Lake District (see my review on South Lakeland Parks - www.southlakelandparks.co.uk). The Lake District is England's largest National park and includes Scafell ... ...are traditional food such as the Cumberland sausage and Kendal mint cake, old traditions such as hound trailing and rush-bearing and it was the home of my many of our nation's favourite writers: William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and the creator of Postman Pat - John Cunliffe. The cool, clear Lake Windermere is unbeatable! As well as being amazing scenery that is hard to beat, the lake is also important for the natural habitats of the water, the ...

No lakeland experience is complete without seeing Ullswater
Advantages: Beautiful countryside, activities for every age, wonderful walking, interesting wildlife Disadvantages: None!
...note around the shores of Ullswater, Pooley Bridge, Patterdale and Glenridding. Pooley Bridge lies at the northern end, and is the town you will pass through should you be visiting the eastern shore. It is very much a honeypot village, with limited parking, several decent pubs and a handful of tearooms. For walkers, it is a useful stopping point on your journey in as the Tourist Information Centre contains an up to date weather forecast and information ... ...one of fifteen visits to Ullswater, and have been rewarded with fifteen different, incredible views. Please bear in mind! Photos of the fells may make them seem benign, and a day may start with glorious sunshine, but it would be irresponsible of me not to give this reminder. Mountain conditions can change in seconds: make sure you are prepared to respond to the changes. Always carry waterproofs, do not wear jeans (they collect water like a very heavy ...

Fertile plains and haystacks...
Advantages: see review Disadvantages: none!
Buttermere is probably one of my favourite places and as I am lucky enough to live within a few hours' drive of it, somewhere I can visit often.
Getting there.
***********
Buttermere is a lake situated in the north west of England's Lake District national park. I am not going to give you detailed information on getting there by car as you can simply take a look on the AA route finder site. I always arrive by car but it is possible to get to Buttermere ... ...day and the weather.
Buttermere means the lake by the dairy pastures and this sums it up perfectly. Buttermere is surrounded by lush green fields, mountains and water. It is in a valley with only one road out so gives me the feeling of being somewhere beautiful and remote.
The lake itself is 1 and a 1/2 miles long, 3/4's of a mile wide and 75 feet deep. Unlike Windermere there are no boating schools here and a lot fewer people giving the lake a ...

A 'host' of reasons to visit
Advantages: Beautiful , unspoilt, picturesque village, heart of the Lakes Disadvantages: Not much chance of 'wandering lonely as a cloud' in peak season
...tradition****
The village of Grasmere situated in the heart of the English Lake District will of course be forever associated with the great poet William Wordsworth 1770-1850 who lived here at Dove Cottage for a period of 8 years at the peak of his writing powers, during which time he penned his most famous piece, the beautiful and evocative "I wandered lonely as a cloud". All quite familiar I hear you cry, but I'm pretty sure you didn't know that ... ...Daffodil Garden. The Friends of Grasmere society who have designed and are maintaining the garden ask visitors to have a daffodil planted in their name, or a name carved on one of the paving stones which make up a winding path around the garden in return for relatively sizeable donations (hence the path isn't finished yet!). Look closely at the names at the very end of the path overlooking the attractive bridge and you may spot such notable celebrity ...

A beautiful place
Advantages: Lovely scenery, not as commercial as Windermere Disadvantages: None
...often. My favourite spot is Ullswater, the second largest of the lakes. I first visited Ullswater, when I was on a holiday with my school aged 11, and staying at Patterdale Hall at the southern tip of the lake. I had two school holidays there and had the opportunity to explore the lake and participate in many walks around the area. I never returned until 20 years later, when I took my own children to Ullswater, and everything was just as I remembered ... ...wash down Glenridding Beck into Ullswater, which was poisoning the lake. It is hard to imagine that now, looking at the clear water. Back down on the lake, a popular attraction is the Ullswater steamers. There are four steamers on the lake which operate all year round, weather permitting. A favourite walk of mine is to take the steamer from Glenridding to Howtown which is around half-way down the lake, and then take the lakeside trail back to Glenridding. ...
