Reviews of Lake District Hotels »
Moldy Bread
Advantages: View Disadvantages: Lots!
Both myself and my fiance love the lake district and have stayed at many hotels with many different star ratings. Last year we got engaged whilst staying at this hotel which was fantastic but was also marred by small but continous problems.
On our first night at the hotel, we were tired and decided to order room service rather than go to the restaurant. We ordered soup and sandwiches. This took an age to come the room, and when it did the soup was ... ...receptionn to ask for replacements they said 'oh so you want some new ones then'! We expected some sort of reparation for this like free drinks or for this to be deducted from the bill, we received nothing, not even a sorry.
The following morning we went into the restaurant to have breakfast, this was also cold. We found the staff to be very ignorant, and more concerned with each other than the needs and wants of their paying guests.
On a lighter ...

Picturesque Windermere
Advantages: excellant value for money Disadvantages: set on steep hill
...We got the details of Hillthwaite hotel from ‘go lakes’ website, I think, although it had come up on numerous other sites as well. We booked a four night stay with dinner, bed & breakfast included.
This review contains sections on Booking, driving, hotel arrival, bedrooms, food, hotel amenities, pricing, area accessibility, with an overall summary in positives and negatives at the very end, should you wish to scroll down to that first as apposed ... ...very politely, that whilst the Hillthwaite appreciated its guests were here to explore the beauty of the Lake District, could we ensure we order our evening meal before 7pm in order to assist the chef and his staff with preparation as all food is freshly cooked.
Our cases were already being taken care of by reception staff, who lead us to our room and did not expect a tip as part and parcel of their function – always a refreshing change when that ...

A Trip Out to the Shore...
Advantages: Nice hotel, good communal facilities Disadvantages: Not the most modern rooms
We stayed at the Lakeside hotel for three nights in August 2007. As we're not of 'above average means' we usually go for the Travelodge option when holidaying, but we decided to save up a bit and go for somewhere that was a bit nicer.
The hotel's website shows the hotel in detail and shows all the facilities it offers and we were attracted by the look of the place and its setting right in the edge of Windermere. I do have to say that, although the ... ...communal areas of the hotel, it does take a few liberties with the guest rooms.
The rooms pictured are of a high standard and relatively modern-looking but the room that we were in (while quite 'cosy') was also a little run-down and in the oldest part of the hotel. I think we were lucky in that we went on one of the only fine and sunny weekends of the summer or else the room might have been a bit cold. The facilities were fair, the bed was comfy ...

I went on the the 16th February 2007 for the weekend and it was fantastic, im not used to posh hotels but this was the poshest place ive ever stayed, it was so posh we had Lords and Ladys staying there.
I went with my Girlfriend for a Valentines weekend and when we arrived in our superior room as we requested for a romantic time we came into the room and the towell was in a heart shape with a rose in the middle, it was very nice.
As i am from Leeds ... ...of looking down at us but it didnt bother us as we were just enjoying the lovely hotel. It has a swimming pool which opens between 8am till 8pm you also have a sauna and a gym which is open to anyone.
The staff 1 in particular was very very friendly and made us feel very welcome.
There is a bird cage for the little birds on the outside of the hotel which i thought was very sweet. The hotel has a view of lake windermere which isnt very good but ...

Abbey House Barrow - Great, but pricey
Advantages: Perfect service, the whole day went as smoothly as possible Disadvantages: Too expensive for us common folk
The Abbey House Hotel is Barrow's only 5 star hotel. I am writing this review after attending a function there, so the review is about this aspect of the hotel services rather than staying in the hotel overnight. Although I shall include a little information on the rooms for your information. The Abbey House Hotel is set in 14 acres of woodland just on the outskirts of Barrow in Furness, in South Cumbria. It's is a sandstone building, first constructed ... ...from the hotel to Furness Abbey itself. When you first turn into the drive of the Abbey House you'll see that the building retains most of its original features, the new Duddon Suite, has been built in such a way that eventually it will blend in with the original building but for now it's lacking a few decades of wear and tear on the outside. The Duddon Suite has a conference room that can hold up to 280 delegates, and the Great Abbey Hall can hold ...
