Woeful Pub food and service
Review of Brackenrigg Inn, Penrith by PaddyBriggs

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Avoid

Brackenrigg Inn A lunch experience of quite unspeakable awfulness. The pub was hardly busy and there seemed to be plenty of staff around - but as customers we were at times invisible. A food order took 40 minutes to appear. We ordered Fish pie and its appearance when plonked on our table was of two large white brown cow pats on cereal bowls. It was served with a large hunk of stalish white bread and an apology for a salad. Hacking ones way through ...
...to be fair, some decent pieces of fish beneath. But the presentation and the general culinary standard was woeful - and this for dishes that were priced at an astonishing £11.95 each! On our experience this is an overpriced rip-off of a pub with diabolical service, unfriendly staff and a complete lack of regard for its customers. Avoid! ... Read review

No telly? Match of the day? Aaargh
Review of Haweswater Hotel, Penrith by dhillcrest

Advantages: Quiet, idyllic location, good staff
Disadvantages: No telly!

Before we start, there were definitely no hawes. Thought it best to get the lame gag out of the way at the start as my wife informed me repeatedly that it wasn't funny and that I should just grow up. It's not easy having been to single-sex Grammar school, a concept sadly wasted on her. I grew up thinking you could only view girls through wire-mesh surrounding a tennis court so I get my titillation where I can. That out the way, I'll go on to the ...
...I can't make my mind up really. That's really useful in a review isn't it? The hotel was booked as it was my wife's birthday and they were selling the rooms of on eBay for £100 per room for b&b and a 2 course dinner. So, we went for the one night. Location ------------ The hotel is literally on the banks of Haweswater, the highest lake in the Lake District at 200-odd metres. Ok so where's the lake? Well it's in the North Lakes, about 10 miles ... Read review

Dogs really are welcome!
Review of Best Western Glenridding Hotel, Penrith by bean372042

Advantages: Superb location
Disadvantages: A little too quiet for some

(I originally posted the first draft of this on trivago.co.uk under bean372042) The Hotel Glenridding is set in a beautiful location right next to Lake Ullswater near Penrith Cumbria, when I say right next to, if you walk more than 30 paces from the car park, you will fall in! It is set in an extremely quiet village with a couple of shops and tearooms and little or no nightlife, however, that is not what this holiday is about. The area hasn't been ...
...retains charm and peace. The hotel itself is a quaint mix of old and new architecture and has 36 rooms including four posters, lake views, family suites and large corner rooms available for a supplement (aprox £25 per night) Reception/lounge and bar area. Walking through the large front door you immediately come to the above area. It is beautifully furnished with an eclectic mix of comfy chairs and settees by a roaring fire. Here you can relax ... Review of Center Parcs Oasis Whinfell, Penrith by dhillcrest

Advantages: Brilliantly concieved. Great accomodation
Disadvantages: money money money money

There is probably no way I can give justice to this place in less that a thousand words. I'll give it a go. In one sentence: If you can afford it - go! Why? Because there is no where that quite reaches the standards this place hits. Not that I've ever seen. I've been 3 times in 5 years. Oasis is a 'community' of hundreds of holiday chalets surrounding a central 'hub' of activity. The homes are dotted around a large pine forest punctuated by numerous ...
...in are exhaustive in the extreme and I can't even begin to remember them all, for the full list check http://www.centerparcs.co.uk/villages/whinfell/todo/index.jsp These activities take place in the main butterfly centre, a huge, attractively build dome housing bars, restaurants, shops, a cinema, nightclub and the huge pool, flanked on one side by a lake on which to do water sports (in boats, not porn). Dotted around the forest are other centres ... Read review

Prices on the door are £59 per room, but if you book early through travelodge's website you can get it as cheap as £15 (but we are talking several months in advance). decent sized family rooms, disabled rooms & smoking rooms available.
