I visted Lake Garda a couple of summers ago and must say it was one of the most people places I have ever visited. Lots of people do seem to complain about it being overly touristy but with scenery like this I can certainly see why. Although it is an extremely popular holiday destination and there are a few touristy gift shops about I still would not say that Lake Garda was too touristy. When I visited I stayed in the largest resort of Riva del Garda a wonderful little town at the north of the lake. Lake Garda has plenty to do with lots of little cafes and restaurants. It is also in walking distance of the next resort. Riva was a beautiful town with a pictureque square which was home to many forms of entertainment in the evening. Towards the end of the summer months the town is also home to a themed festival which was based upon the jungle book when I was there. Due to Riva being the most northern point of the lake the area is surrounded by mountains giving stunning scenery in contrast to the very beautiful meditterean feel at the south of the lake. It is also possible to do a short walk up the mountain side to visit a small castle which has a lovely cafe selling ice crea, perfect for looking over the view. The shores of lake garda are surrounded by pebbly beaches which makes it perfectly possible to go for a dip. The lake is also very popular with windsurfers. From any resort in the lake it is easily possible to visit other resorts either by using the ferries or from organised tours of the lake. I did the latter and had a wonderful day with five resorts squeezed in, although I would have liked more time in some of them. Sirmone at the south is definately worth a visit with its fairytale castle. Lake Garda is nicely situated in reach of many other Italian attractions such a the dolomites, milan, Venice and Verona. I think it was a wonderful place the only dowside being it can be expensive to visit.
