Lake Maggiore is in the North of Italy, and it is a popular destination with Germans, but also locals. You can swim and bathe is some of the beaches on the lake, but not al of them, you should check out on the local newspapers. The west shore, in Piemonte, is richer and with better hotels than the other side of the lake. I like very much the mountains just over the lake, especially in the East side, in Lombardia. In Luino, on the east side, there is a local bar with always very sexy waitresses, it is not far from the small port, near a large supermarket, I do not remember the name of it, but remember some of the employees.

Advantages: The Cities of Como and Bellagio around the Lake, close to Switzerland/Milan, Can tour Lake by Boat Disadvantages: You won't be able to stay forever (unless your Rich and George Clooney).
