Located in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha is one the few fresh water Lakes in Kenya. It is home to a large population of Flamingos, Buffalo, Giraffe, Hippo, Colobus monkeys just to name a few.
The Local Maasai (One of Kenya’s many tribes) called the lake Nai’posha meaning rough water, but in time the name changed to what it is now due to the number of settlers moving into then region during the colonial times. The new name also refers to the region surrounding the area. Naivasha is the horticultural heartland of Kenya with a majority of it produce ending up in overseas market. It is defiantly worth seeing how nature and agriculture can actually be done side by side.

Apart from the lake, they are other sites in the region that are worth visiting. There is the Hell’s gate national park. For those of you who are archaeological enthusiasts may know a lot about this region as quite a few fossils have been found here. Hell’s gate national park is not a big as the other national parks in Kenya but it is one of the very few that allows you to cycle through it. This is something that has to be done, riding in fresh air next some fabulous wildlife, Giraffes on one side, Zebras on the other. There is no fencing to protect you, (apart from a game warden) you are totally in the wild. For those who fancy something a bit more closer to nature, a guide could take you by horseback further into the park. The advantage of the horses is that they will allow you to get closer to animals. They are no cages out here you get to see wild animals in their own environment.

If relaxing is what you are after, the climate here will offer nothing short of that. There is a golf course near by which is very challenging. This is a golf club with a difference; The Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort is just one and a half hours’ drive from Nairobi – or a 30-minute flight to its own all-weather airstrip. Over looking Lake Naivasha, it’s the ideal place to enjoy a couple of sundowners.

About 20 - 30 minutes away is Lake Nakuru, which, like Lake Naivasha, has its own national park. It happens to be a lot bigger than the one in Naivasha. This means there is a lot more variety of game here and your chances of seeing Africa’s ‘Big Five’ (Lion, Buffalo, Elephant, Rhino, and Leopard) are higher. If you are really lucky, you could actually witness a hunt in progress (not humans e.g. lion hunting zebra). Lake Nakuru is famous for it huge flamboyance of flamingos. Originally the park was a bird sanctuary with over 450 bird species but was elevated to national park status.

Getting there is relatively easy; flights to Nairobi cost around £300 - £1000 return depending on when they are booked. It is advisable to employ the services of a travel agent like ‘Go 4 Fun safaris’. English is spoken in Kenya (being a former British colony) so communication should not be a problem. Accommodation varies depending on what you would consider as comfortable. A three star hotel would set you back about £15-£20. The best thing is to do some research before you travel, it can make life a whole lot easier. If you do have any questions or would like a more in depth view please do not hesitate to contact me.
