I used to live in Kenya, about 50km away from the town of Nakuru. A regular activity for myself and the family would be to visit Lake Nakuru National Park every Wednesday afternoon. Having lived in Kenya, I had the chance to visit so many different game parks, however Nakuru has always been a firm favourite of mine.
The park is set around Lake Nakuru, and so provides the perfect setting for any visitor to enjoy their game drive. The Park is very easy to drive around, so driving yourself is not a problem. The Lake is famous for its huge attraction of flamingoes (sometimes seen in their millions) throughout the year, which adds to the beauty of the landscape.
During your drive you are likely to see an extensive variety of animals and bird life. The park is home to 4 of the big 5 with the park being too small to hold elephant. However, lion, buffalo, rhino and leopard can be seen. I have always struggled in spotting leopard throughout the many game parks I have visited. Nakuru, however, has been one place that I have regularly have been able to spot them. This is due to the amount of woodland as you enter the park, so spotting them is easier because you can spot the leopards tail dangling below the branches.
Lions are famous at Nakuru, for the reason that there has been so many sightings of lions in trees as well as in the open grassland! Both types of rhino can be seen, the white and the black rhino, the latter being rare with Nakuru holding the most in the country. There is a huge amount of antelope in the park including the common waterbuck. The rare rothschild's giraffe is often seen and there is also a large number of buffalo and hippos can be seen around the lakes edge.
There are many places around the park where one can stop and enjoy a picnic whilst taking in the views or fending off the baboons! Or if you prefer there are two lodges in the park where you can go eat and if you choose stay the night. For the braver guest, there are possibiltes of camping in the park, however I havent done this myself!
I would recommend anyone coming to Kenya to come visit Nakuru as you wont be disappointed. Nakuru is a 3 hour drive from Nairobi and a very friendly place to visit not only for the park!
