Lake Titicaca spans the border between Peru and Bolivia and is one of (if not the) highest navigable lakes in the world at altitude 4600m (approx).
It is also the largest lake in South America.

The Peruvian side of Titicaca is better known for its "floating islands" but the Bolivian side has much to recommend it. It is very undeveloped by western standards - there are a few, well spaced restaurants and boats for hire, but nothing equating to mass tourism - yet.

There are two sections to the lake - the more famous larger section contains the Isla del Sol - where it is possible to stay overnight. On our trip, however, we only went for a day visit and went to the smaller part of the lake, visiting one of the islands there.

It was a fascinating trip. On the islands, villagers live a subsistence lifestyle which is, as yet largely unchanged. Not for long though - the writing is on the wall. Our guide told us that young people all want to go to the city. Walking around, we saw ancient archaeological monuments which had been destroyed by looters. Guinea pigs ran wild in the fields.

On the island we met two boys who would have their picture taken for a few Boliviano, (I'm not convinced that this is a good thing for the local economy, but still) - they were shepherds and still had traditional slingshots to control sheep. A woman, who wouldn't come near us walked along spinning wool.

Landscape-wise it is stunning. The weather is almost always fine and reflections in the lake are beautiful.

On our return we had an excellent traditional fish meal eaten in a restaurant overlooking the lake.

Just one word of warning - at such high altitudes you risk altitude sickness and - particularly at Lake Titicaca, sunburn. The high intensity light reflected off the lake makes sunburn a probability.
