The lakeside hotel is set in beautifull lakedistrict on the banks of Lake Windermere. I decided to treat my wife to a 2 night break away. We went for the best room in the hotel hoping for a romantic break. Well it hasnt been the worst £500 ive spent but i must say i was a little dissappointed with the hotel for the money.
The Room: The room looked really quite dated and old, i realise this is an old hotel but that should add to the character and charm of your stay. The bedroom was small, had a nice view if you could put up with the draft coming through the windows. The bathroom was a reasonable size but the sunken bath looked as if it hadnt been washed properly for a long time. Similarly the shower was difficult to get to the correct temprature and the sinks were in a similar condition to the bath. In all honestly it looked as if the room should have a whole new refit. On the plus side there had been a new wing built to the hotel which appeared to have better fixtures and fittings, properbly because they were so new. This was no conselation at the time because all of the new rooms were standard rooms and much cheaper price. Wish i hadnt paid for the supposed extra luxury.
I did make my point to the manager of the hotel who was sympathetic, but could not offer me a change of room as they were fully booked, there was also no offer of reduction in price either. I really did not want to argue as we were only there for 2 days and i did not want to spend half that time moving rooms or arguinfg with the manager.
I must say apart from that the rest of the hotel was really nice. They have a lovely spa and pool area which has a large glass frontage so you can look out over lake windermere, it has suffiect sun loungers and a jacuzzi to relax in. This is reletavley new and is in tip top condition. Could not fault this facility at all.
My second major compliment was the food and the service at this hotel. Outstanding is the word i think i would use. The break i paid for included for dinner on one of the nights in their A'La carte restaurant, and i must say it was excellent. A 6 course meal up to a very high standard indeed. There were the usual 3 courses but they have another 3 course which are mystery courses. Although i like this kind of thing it is not everyones cup of tea. Never the less the service was good and food excellent. Wine was particularly expensive. The cheaper to medium price range for a bottle of wine was around £20.00 ranging up to £70. £20 plus is quite expensive for the house wine served.
Other restaurants in the hotel include a Brasserie where a 3 course meal with coffee is around £35. This was quite good value and once again service and food was excellent.
The hotel has a conservatory overlooking the lake which serves light luches and snacks. Coffee and dessert can also be taken in the conservatory on an evening after you meal should you wish to have a change of scene. We did this and it was really quite pleasent as there were other diners doing the same thing and if gave you a chance to talk and meet people.
The hotel is right on the lake and has a gondola you can catch to take you to Ambleside, these run really frequently and are good fun. A much nicer way to get to ambleside as there is a terrible parking problem there in high season and you simply do not have that hasstle. Well worth a trip.
Overall my break here was good, but the rooms are a real disappointment and certainly not good value for money. If i was to go back i would book a standard room and enjoy the dining and pool/spa facilities on offer and think that this is waht im paying for, not to have a luxurious room.
I would recommend this hotel but only on the above comment.

We had tea in the conservatory this summer and I've been toying with the idea of treating my wife to a weekend break. Thanks for the warning on the rooms!
