Belize it or not!

Advantages: The Blue Hole, rich with history
Disadvantages: beggars following you around town asking for money

Because Belize is situated close to the equator it has a very humid and hot climate. Temperatures usually 35-40 degrees centigrade, When it came to exploring Belize I wanted to experience local Belize and some of the Mayan history. There are several archaeological sites in Belize which are open to the public. We visited Altun Ha which is north of Belize City so we had to take a tour (on a bus with air con!). As you drive through Belize, you notice it is not so flat and quite hilly in certain areas. Given it's subtropical climate it is quite dry but you can find tropical fruit growing in different places, especially bananas. Sugar plantations are quite rife and is Belize's biggest export Altun Ha was a major ceremonial center during the Classic Period, as well as a vital trade center that linked the Caribbean shores with other ...

Archaeological&Forensic Sciences (Bournemouth Uni)

Advantages: Wide variety of material covered, interesting, lots of fieldtrips
Disadvantages: possible expense of uni tuition!

now! The excavation acts as a training dig and all the archaeology students from the Conservation Sciences school come together to learn and put into practice the theory taught in Field Archaeology. Archaeological excavation is not the other thing that goes on on this dig. Students (and volunteers) get the opportunity to try a hand at field walking, geophysical surveying (I am on tomorrow), environmental processing (I did today), find processing, microscopy (next week!) and a few other areas which aren't coming to mind right now. (The environmental processing from today is why I was stood with my arms in cold water thinking about writing my review finally!) To find out more information on this years excavation specifically, search for the 'Knowlton Prehistoric Landscape Project' at High Lea Farm :-) -Forensics- The forensic ...

Up the New River

Advantages: Adventure on the river
Disadvantages: Sad feeling

Lamanai is in the North of Belize, an area which had been inhabited by the ancient Mayas and still retains a lot of its past. It is possible to get there on a daily trip, or to spend the night there, although accomodation can eb a bit pricey. If you can afford it, though, I would recommend you spend the night there, since it is very athmospheric Most tourists get there by river, and so did I. We managed to spot 1 crocodile on our trip. Once we got there, what stuck me most is the local forest. You can visit the ruins at Lamanai only during the day. Our group was relatively small, only 6 of us, including a couple of German lesbians, I suppose, who felt particulalry out of place there. Apart for the ancient ruins, what each tourist visit, including myself, is the Indian Church. The strongest recallection I have of this trip ...
