I'm a Yorkshire lass, born & bred and proud of it. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else! I am married to my lovely hubby Lee and my terrible twosome are now 6 and 3, they don't half grow quickly.

My family and I have just returned from Lanzarote where we stayed at the Lanzarote Bay hotel. We traveled with MyTravel, the conglomerate that includes Airtours, direct holidays Panorama and the travel agent Going Places.
This op will mainly concentrate on the hotel with a few comments about MyTravel.
The hotel is in Costa Tequise which is about a 20 minute drive from the airport. We arrived at our hotel at 10:40pm, half an hour after we should have because of a baggage handling delay. No one was available to help us to our room and we were on the third floor. The hotel did not have a lift. We had a pushchair with our two year old sleepily ensconced inside; our 5 year old, two large suitcases, and two small kids pull along suitcases. If it were not for a guest that helped us up the steps,
we would have had to make 2 or 3 trips up the 39 steps to our room.
When we got to our room it was clean and quite spacious, we did notice however that it was very warm and there was a buzzing/humming sound. The heat and the humming kept us awake all night. The next morning I noticed ants in the room too. Now, I am not stupid, I know that insects are all part of the territory in hot countries but I still wanted them spraying. I reported the problems to the reception and the room was sprayed the same day, the humming noise was not sorted out though.
The brochure states that the hotel is over a kilometer away from the beach, which it runs a courtesy bus to, we did however find a small beautiful beach less than 10 minutes walk way. There are also a few shops, restaurants, and a bank in the same area, basically just around the back of the hotel. We found the mini market (netto) to be a lot cheaper than the hotel shop and found it hilarious to see some of the snobbier guests around the resort swinging Netto bags in their hands! (for those of you that don’t have Netto in your area it is a cheap, cut-price supermarket)
The pool area of the hotel was very good, if a little tatty around the edges. There is a large ‘organic’ shaped pool and a toddler pool that is totally separate. There were plenty of sun loungers to go around but if your towels were not laid claim there was a lot of vying for the better positions, a fact we learned on day 2. The item that isn’t in plenty full supply is parasols, there are trees around the area for shade but there are only around 10 –15 parasols to go around. For an hotel with over 200 rooms I think that is it is very minimal.
The hotel runs on an all-inclusive basis, however many of the facilities at the hotel do need to be paid for locally. All these amounts soon add up to the cost of the holiday. An example of one of these costs that reduced our spending money was the TV in the room. It cost €1 per hour (around 65p) it may not sound a lot but with 2 small children who we wanted to keep out of the heat in the afternoon it soon added up over the length of the holiday. The safe was also €20 per week tp hire + a €5 per week deposit.
The hotel has very good children’s activities and the staff are brilliant. As part of our package holiday we were guaranteed 5 free places in the club per week for our five year old, our 2 year old would have to be paid for to go to the crèche. If it hadn’t been for the ‘special offers’ they were running though this would have been expensive. As there were offers on it cost €33 for 5 two hour sessions. There are also babysitting sessions available twice a week from 9pm – 11pm. This was very good value for money whilst we were at the hotel, again because of special offers, instead of costing €22 it cost €9 including sweets, a movie and face painting/tattoos. As the Lanzarote Bay is a part of the Hotetur chain there were also activities and entertainment set up by the British Hotetur staff, this was completely free. My 5 year old thought these were boring though so he only went twice (didn't help that they played bingo on the 2 occasions he went)
On the food side it was plentiful if a little strange sometimes (we had sprouts on the poolside snack bar one day!) The food did tend to be ‘recycled’ though, if we had roast beef one day (freshly carved and beautiful) the leftovers were served sliced in gravy the next lunchtime, and leftover veg were similarly served up the next day in a béchamel or cheese sauce. The hotel had a couple of theme nights that were very nice – a themed cocktail as you went into the restaurant and a vast array of dishes. Whilst we were there, we had a Mexican night (yum) a Canarian night (way too salty) an Italian night (carb overload!) and my fave the Chinese night were we could have a quarter of a freshly cooked duck. After a week we did get a little fed up of the meals so had a couple of meals out and takeaway pizza once. We had out meals at the newly opened Fat Larry’s Diner, which was very nice and had very reasonably priced food.
During the day drinks were searved in plastic cups, for safety around the pool. THe only problem being that this was upto 6pm (depending which bar you went to it was all night) and my husband got fed up of going backwards and forwards to the bar as the cups were very small. The bar staff tended to give a LOT of spirit in the cups too - over half of the cup - so they were very strong, but I got used to it! ;-)
Overall, it was a nice holiday and we would probably go again when the kids are 2 or 3 years older, the hotel staff were very friendly and the food was ok, the entertainment in the evening was good too. The holiday was only marred by the fact that my son broke his nose and the flight home was horrendous, but that is a totally different op!
Please remember to reviewt this op, even if you don't think it was very useful. Thanks. Amanda x
