A truly magical Christmas experience

Advantages: Memories to treasure
Disadvantages: Quite expensive, but well worth it

...of Finland's total land area, Lapland shares it's borders with Sweden, Norway, and Russia. The actual borders are a little blurred however, as the native Saami people are distributed throughout all four countries. Although they are often referred to as Laplanders from the Finnish 'lappalainen,' Saamis prefer to use their own name for themselves. Lapland plays host to over half the Saami population of Finland.

...to the holiday. Winter in Lapland is pretty much as you would expect from a region straddling the Arctic Circle, and definitely feels extremely cold when compared to the UK. Temperatures while we were there ranged between -1ºC and -27ºC. Average temperature in December is around -12ºC. However, we were informed that it tends to get even colder in January, when it plummets to around -35ºC. Snow falls in Lapland between October and May and it is common ... more

Lapland Yllas Santa short Break (Inghams)

Advantages: Lots of fun things to do (santa park, reindeer ride, husky ride, snow mobile)
Disadvantages: Inghams could have organised better for snowsuit + boot pick-up & return

...a Santa short break in Lapland this December (16th-19th, 4 days 3 nights) with Inghams based on the recommendation of a friend. The location is the Yllas skiing resort in a log cabin (half-board) via Kittila airport from Gatwick. The price is around £1700 for 2 adults and 1 child. Excursions (day 2 reindeer safari; day 3 reindeer safari and/or snowmobile safari) cost extra £300-350. Snow suits and boots are provided but not gloves/hat. Important ...
...Akas hotel and the 'Destination Lapland Safari Office' (for collecting the complimentary snow suits and snow boots). However there are two Destination Lapland Safari Offices. The one near the Akas hotel only provide tourist info i.e. a free local map and advice for activities. The other one (~20 min walk) issues the snow suits and boots. When we arrived at the resort, the rep briefly showed us where the Akas hotel is and then dropped us off near ...

The Experience of a Lifetime

Advantages: The Whole Lapland Experience
Disadvantages: Nothing really - except maybe -39 temps

...about a trip to Finnish Lapland with the company Norvista. Norvista arrange trips to Lapland for durations of anything from one day up to 5 days. I visited Lapland over Christmas 2002 for 5 days, so had the benefit of the whole experience. It isn't cheap, but there is so much you get for your money, so i'll tell you about it before i shock you with the cost. In my party, there was me, my husband, my mum and my 4 year old daughter, and this is how ...
...don't need to spend any money over there. In fact there aren't actually any shops near where we were staying, so you really didn't need any money at all. NB - Obviously not all trips to Lapland are 5 days, but if you get the chance its worth doing. ...

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Advantages: A wonderful winter holiday. Snow, snow & more snow! reindeer, husky dogs, Santa
Disadvantages: Very cold in the winter and 4 hours of daylight

...experience by taking them to Lapland for the day. Our journey to Lapland actually began in January of this year (2002) when Sharon and the girls (Kirsty, Kerry, Lisa & Gemma) watched a program on the TV. This program was about children who suffered a lot of problems in their lives and were being given a special treat by being taken to Lapland for the day. From seeing that program Sharon never stopped talking about Lapland and how much she would like ...
...to try to book a Lapland trip, but no-one knew who we could book through. That’s when I turned to the Internet and Google! A quick search using the Google search engine and I found a site called Santa Trips (http://www.santatrips.co.uk) that looked promising. After a quick look round the site I added it to ‘My Favourites’ and left it so that I could have a proper look at the site the next day. The next day (Sunday) I went back to Santa Trips and ...

Ruka Cottages, Ruka, Finland Christmas 2008

Advantages: Stunning Scenery, Skiing, Snow & Santa
Disadvantages: Expensive

21st December 2008 is the day we have been waiting for we booked our 1st family ski holiday to Ruka in Finland. The kids have been non stop talking about this since we booked it on 8th Jan 08. This is not a holiday where you think about cost it is worth every penny and when we got back money was never mentioned as it was one of those priceless moments. Flight for Manchester to Kussamo took aprox 3hrs & 40 mins and was at 6.40am. As we bagan out descent ...
...of snow I myself was getting giddy by this time in equal ammounts as my 8,6 & 5 year olds my husband was playing it cool but not for long. Kussamo airport is very small with no duty free shop just a small shop offering souveniers and coffee's and pasteries. Cases were pretty quick coming to us and the coach journey to our accomodation took approx 30 mins which gave us a good chance to take in the stunning scenery. The drivers are very skilled and ...

The trip of a lifetime which I'll never forget!

Advantages: Lots of trips to go on and things to do, the people in Finland are friendly
Disadvantages: Very far away from any shops

I first saw pictures of Lapland in an aeroplane magazine coming from a holiday with my boyfriend and thought "wow I'd love to go there". It isn't just for kids, as I found out its just as much for adults as it is the children. My boyfriend and I booked it for December but we had to book early as places in Lapland get booked pretty quickly for Christmas. And I would recommend going before Christmas, it adds to the excitment more I think rather than ...
...the hotel (every hotel in Lapland does the same) loaned everybody special body suits to wear over our clothes. At first I thought there was no point but they came in so useful. They protect your normal clothes from getting dirty and also they're water-proof which is important because as the temperature is so cold it is important not to get wet or let your feet get wet. There are more trips than these to do as well, if you are interested in skiiing ...

Lapland

Advantages: cheaper, more flexible
Disadvantages: None

daughter met the 'real' santa claus and elves - this tour included lunch, and half a day skiing tution which was a whole lot of fun, we also went back to the santa village by bus(took about half and hour) which gave us more time to spend in the theme park - It was the kind of magic you only read about in story books. We spent 6 days there at a total cost, including meals, of £1100, a saving of £500 with 2 extra days thrown in. It annoys me that tour operators inflate prices at the expense of children who may never get to have a holiday abroad because of tour operators greed. The holiday in Lapland is specifically geared towards children and Finland is so child friendly that I think every child should experience it. Do not believe what you read in these brochures about excursions being fully booked if you do not book through the tour ...
